Title: Fuck
Post by: Leo on December 01, 2011, 02:18:43 am
My comp got hit by something strong tonight and I only wish I knew the exact source.

Deleted all of my files and I had to do a system restore, but I still lost a lot of stuff, some of which I was able to save, most of which I simply cannot find. My comp's still going so there's that at least, but seriously, fuck whoever it is that creates viruses/etc, son of a bitch is one of the worst people in the world if you ask me.

Why not try this http://www.filehippo.com/download_file_recovery/tech/ (http://www.filehippo.com/download_file_recovery/tech/)

or this http://www.filehippo.com/download_recuva/ (http://www.filehippo.com/download_recuva/)

Should probably disconnect your internet or wireless immediately in case it has a network package in the payload.

Also never, EVER system restore when you get hit by a virus or rootkit. jesus christ.

Run MalwareBytes, ComboFix, and BlackLight before running Recuva. Then try to get your files back by using a secure USB loaded with some live-boot of something like Linux, so that you can immediately boot into an OS with those files then clean them in linux with a virus scan.

Ouch.  I hate to think of how this is going to effect the porn community.  I'm sure there will be rioting in the streets.

Anyway, like c-zom said, never run a system restore if u get a virus.  Also, u need to be careful what u download and do regular scans.  I reccomend AVG to everyone when I fix their computers, and if someone brings a computer to me to get fixed that has viruses, I add a copy into my fee.  Helps keep them safe in the future.

Anyway, i would suggest a full shutdown of your network.  Then use a "clean" computer to scan every hard drive or jump drive you use for evidence of the virus.  There's a chance it could have been a timebomb and has been spreading.  Finally, flash your router back to factory settings, then give it a new password.  Never know what someone might burritos behind.  Oh also reset all your passwords on everything.  I know of some viruses that are meant to steal your cookied passwords as well as system passwords and then damage the system so you can't tell what happened.

I'll say this, you've convinced me to go buy another 1tb drive as a blackup.  Gonna buy it and mirror ma Shit today.

I was there last December. Luckily my files lost doesn't matter. Good luck fixing it. Viruses are quite nasty.

It'll slow down the porn economy for a couple of hours but I think it'll pick back up in no time at all. I really wish I knew the exact source of the virus though so that I could simply avoid that site forever.

So I already ran the system restore, what now?

I haven't been downloading anything from shady areas, and I usually stream from only a few sources that haven't done me wrong in the past. Mainly, I'll download things from my school's website to do homework. Right now I'm using McAfee, Ad-aware and Spybot.

I'm running off my school's network, so I have no connection with the router? Haven't plugged a usb drive into my comp in a while, either, so I'm not worried about that. When it comes to passwords, I had some company profile info in a locked excel file and my firefox is set to automatically clear cookies/passwords/history anytime it closes.

Btw, thanks for the sympathy, Mia. Most of the documents lost were old papers written for classes a while back and I was able to save some of the more important docs that I reuse by going through the recent history on Word/Excel and resaving some of the docs that I could find.

The one thing I'm worried about now is that I lost my Oblivion saves. Do my save's get backed up in the cloud, or should I assume that I lost about 6 hrs of playtime(not bad, but still a decent chunk of my time)?

Ad-aware?  Spybot?  Fuck, those things still exist.  Yeah, been there sort of, but didnt lose anything.  Just fucked up my computer.

Also, my backup server runs linux.  Which reminds me, I shut it down when I went on vacation and never booted it back up.  Need to do soon.
Title: Re: Fuck
Post by: Pterrydactyl on December 01, 2011, 07:49:23 pm
Saves are backed up to the cloud.

Anyway, if your on your schools network could very well have been attacked by someone else on the network, or someone who downloaded bad porn that had a network attack package on it.

At least you can feel better knowing that your probably not the only person in your school to get hit if thats what caused it.

Also, maybe you should turn your firewall on?
Title: Re: Fuck
Post by: Leo on December 01, 2011, 08:12:13 pm
My firewall is on according to McAfee? Also, I hope I can recover my saves then, though I think I have to redownload Oblivion since I seem to have lost it, too.

But at least I can keep watching porn.
Title: Re: Fuck
Post by: undiscoveredbum on December 01, 2011, 09:27:33 pm
That must suck.

I've never had to deal with something like that. I've only ever found one virus on any computer I've owned, and I can blame flash for that. Then I got NoScript.

Title: Re: Fuck
Post by: Mia on December 01, 2011, 10:11:38 pm
McAfee sucks, just warning you. I have had a virus that actually overtakes McAfee before and uses it against you. I would suggest downloading Spybot S&D. It has a program that runs in the background and doesn't let any program do anything without you approving it. That is on  top of the other programs suggested. I have about 3-4 free programs running on my computer to protect it. Run regular scans and update your computer regularly, be careful about what you download.

I'm the one that's supposed to be ignoring what you say, Mia, not the other way around. Also, I hate those prompts from Spybot since I never really know what program's asking me for the change so I usually refuse everything until it gives up and stops asking.

Eh, it is not only downloads though. I put it in there just in case. Visiting questionable sites, heck opening an email with an image can give you a virus potentially. Adblock if you have it can be useful too. Spybot's prompts may be annoying but it is a good tool. The most effective one I have found is having 2-3 programs to run regular scans on plus some protection program.  Of those programs, McAfee isn't known to be a great antivirus though. It can be taken over. You may want to look into another. If you have any idea what kind of virus you had, you can at least understand if you're still at risk or not. And sorry for missing it, I just posted generic tips, I have been running on a lack of sleep (consider it payback for your remarks :P).

Hey now, the rialliance.net isn't that questionable! And I think it was one of those viruses that wanted me to pay to get it removed. It started by closing out firefox, then deleting random stuff and running a "Windows" program that was checking for viruses. Took me a sec to figure out that the program was the virus, but when I clicked on its help section, it mentioned that to get better support, you need to be a subscriber. That was my hint to go "Oh Shit" and immediately restart my machine.

Mia is right, McAfee sucks.  I used to work for Network Associates (now McAfee), and can confirm that the product is crap.  Thank god I was working on another product line, the flailing ex-Network General Sniffer.  And the company was under prolonged SEC investigation for forward-booking revenue.

Anyhow, just download a trial version of Kaspersky or Norton, and install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware to clean your shit out.  Also, have a look in your firewall, and make sure ports 443 and 23 are blocked, because this is how your porn surfing 'got you in trouble'.

Just use Microsoft Security Essentials for Antivirus/Antimalware

It's really the best thing to use and it's free.

Or stop downloading from sketchy websites and torrents. Use Chrome.

I literally don't even run antivirus programs or firewalls on my Windows installs.

Oh and stop running as an Admin for every day things

Use a limited account.

You can right click "exe" and "msi", hit "Run as", select your admin user and type your password.

No need to even log out.

If you insist on running as Admin, please use VAC or whatever the fuck it's called

Or be a man and run something *nix

VAC is a Steam thing. :P UAC's pretty good and I'd never go without it. You should still technically be using a user-level account and use UAC to elevate, but UAC hasn't been circumvented yet so if you feel like being lazy, you can.

The crying people made over it when it was introduced was hilarious too. Clicking a prompt every once in a while does not hurt, and goes miles towards proper security which most people simply didn't practice in XP.

This worked for me on Xp in the past, http://redfireworkz.blogspot.com/2010/10/windows-firewall-greyed-out.html (http://redfireworkz.blogspot.com/2010/10/windows-firewall-greyed-out.html)

yeah, id seriously just reformat leo... it just sticks all your files into c:\windows.old

all the options for your programs can be saved *for the most part* ill walk you through the steps on irc if you want. its not really worth the hassle most of the time to fight the virus. as a side note, i might have gotten the same thing on my parents computer once. it hid every file on the computer.

also... this should take ownership of every file on your pc. i havent tested because it would take quite a while on mine...
Code: (windows powershell) [Select]
takeown /F /R *

PS C:\Users\hack> takeown /?

TAKEOWN [/S system [/U username [/P [password]]]]
        /F filename [/A] [/R [/D prompt]]

Description:
This tool allows an administrator to recover access to a file that
was denied by re-assigning file ownership.

Parameter List:
/S           system          Specifies the remote system to
                                 connect to.

/U           [domain\]user   Specifies the user context under
                                 which the command should execute.

/P           [password]      Specifies the password for the
                                 given user context.
                                 Prompts for input if omitted.

/F           filename        Specifies the filename or directory
name pattern. Wildcard "*" can be used
                                 to specify the pattern. Allows
                                 sharename\filename.

/A                           Gives ownership to the administrators
group instead of the current user.

/R                           Recurse: instructs tool to operate on
files in specified directory and all
                                 subdirectories.

/D           prompt          Default answer used when the current user
does not have the "list folder" permission
on a directory.  This occurs while operating
                                 recursively (/R) on sub-directories. Valid
values "Y" to take ownership or "N" to skip.

    /?                           Displays this help message.

NOTE: 1) If /A is not specified, file ownership will be given to the
             current logged on user.

          2) Mixed patterns using "?" and "*" are not supported.

          3) /D is used to suppress the confirmation prompt.

Examples:
    TAKEOWN /?
    TAKEOWN /F lostfile
    TAKEOWN /F \\system\share\lostfile /A
    TAKEOWN /F directory /R /D N
    TAKEOWN /F directory /R /A

Title: Re: Fuck

Reasons to hate McAfee:

- 5 years ago McAfee was good because its client was small (ie it did not impact system performance much), at a time when Norton was punishing.  Then Norton caught up and McAfee bloated.

- If the point is to defend against viruses, I favour Norton because it has a larger install base than any other, so they are first to get into trouble statistically.

- Their mother company, Network Associates, forward booked revenue in breach of SEC regulations, even while they were under investigation.  Their CEO was jailed, along, I think, with 22 others.  They make your security software.  (ok, it is a geeky point, but the irony is not lost on me.  I have tried in vain to convince peopke for 5 years that this is funny, and will not give up).

Security essentials is a lark.  It is a conflict of interest for MS to be protecting its own lazy code.  Go with Norton 360 build 5 - it is not particularly snazy, but it works.  I am a bittorrent hound, and previously k-lite, and have never had an issue.  That said I don't have Leo's particular interest in Siberian cheerleaders.
