You can right click "exe" and "msi", hit "Run as", select your admin user and type your password.

VAC is a Steam thing. UAC's pretty good and I'd never go without it. You should still technically be using a user-level account and use UAC to elevate, but UAC hasn't been circumvented yet so if you feel like being lazy, you can.

The crying people made over it when it was introduced was hilarious too. Clicking a prompt every once in a while does not hurt, and goes miles towards proper security which most people simply didn't practice in XP.

I download all kinds of shit, don't use UAC, and have never had a problem.  I am selective about what I download, and basically just have Norton, and Anti-Malware.  I mean I download A LOT OF SHIT.  So, leo was probably looking up Russian cheerleaders.

FUCK FUCK SQUARED!!! I got hit by the same virus last night, so today I went in safe mode, found the virus, and manually deleted it. Then I had to manually unhide every single one of my files and programs, damn bitch. However, now I can't turn my firewall on and Windows is not helping me.

are you running norton or something?  if you are unable to turn the windows firewall on, it is probably because another one is enabled, which turn the winfw off.  what os are you on, and is it 32 or 64 bit?

I think I'm going to try and uninstall mcafee and reinstall. I noticed that my mcafee firewall program was missing from the folder it should be in so I'm going to try and bring it back.

yeah, id seriously just reformat leo... it just sticks all your files into c:\windows.old

all the options for your programs can be saved *for the most part* ill walk you through the steps on irc if you want. its not really worth the hassle most of the time to fight the virus. as a side note, i might have gotten the same thing on my parents computer once. it hid every file on the computer.

also... this should take ownership of every file on your pc. i havent tested because it would take quite a while on mine...
