Some time this fall I am planning on heading to the Australia area of the world. If you live there, where are you, and do girls like guys with American accents? I heard they like us for being generally nicer and more chivalrous.

I want to know where I should go in the 2 months I'll be there at the end of this year. New Zealand, Sydney, and the barrier reef are obvious choices. Give me non-tourist trap areas. I spent 2 months in Europe backpacking and staying with strangers, and I didn't go on a single guided tour. I went into towns without any plans and found my way into a hostel on the same day. I'm looking for local advice.

If you really want to get off the beaten track in Australian and New Zealand you will need to rent your own transportation since due to the spread our nature of the countries public transportation is pretty sparse and focused on the main centres and tourist areas.

I've done a trip from Brisbane to Cairns a few times and Arsenal has also done a trip from Sydney to Brisbane. The easiest place to focus your travel is along the east coast working your way up and down and there is plenty of stuff to see there, and you can easily make excursions further into Australia.

Australia's biggest drawcard is its wildlife. I'd be sure to visit the rainforest areas of northern Queensland and you are bound to see all sorts of animals from crocs to cassowaries. There is a nice hostel set in the rainforest at Cape Tribulation that is worth visiting. Also Broken River if you want to see wild platypus. Magnetic Island is also a nice place to visit and they have a wildlife sanctuary where they let you hold snakes and baby crocs. Apart from that the main cultural centres are Sydney and Melbourne, although I haven't been to Melbourne.

As for New Zealand it is best tackled with a trip from North to South. The beaches and forests of Northland are worth exploring and you have to dry dune boarding in the Hokianga. Also should visit Rotorua and Taupo for the geothermal activity, think Yellowstone. Wellington was recently voted the best capital city in the world for tourists or something like that, plus Te Papa is here so if you want to learn anything about NZ you have to come here. I haven't actually explore the South Island but if you want to explore wild mountain areas that is the place. Glaciers, whale watching, hiking, kayaking etc are all things to do in the South Island. And if you are an adrenaline junky you should visit Queenstown which proclaims itself as the adventure capital of the world. Since NZ has less interesting wildlife than Australia NZ's strength is its natural beauty.

But 2 months is not enough time to do all that so you will have to pick and choose.

Also, it's worth doing a trip to Fraser Island. We did an organised tour and it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the Blue Mountains too. If you walk up the giant staircase there, let me know how fast you did it. I have a video of myself running up as quickly as I could.

In New Zealand, come to the bay of islands. You should hire a boat and go exploring. Just take a fishing rod, a snorkel and lunch and you are sorted for a good day. I would recommend staying away from our cities, they're all so boring. Go out to little towns. If you can't pronouce the name, that is a good thing and means you'll probably have more fun there.

Two months in Europe, and I'm 100% American english with no regional dialect.

According to Wikipedia there's a "general american" dialect that is actually a thing. Like in the part of that video you just posted, and is what is most often used in movies, TV, radio and news. It's mostly used in the Midwestern US.

I've always considered it "normal", and having more of a lack of an accent than having one at all. It's weird.

Proper spoken english is considered native to North/Mid western N.America I think? Had a huge argument with the girlfriend once that an "english accent" is not considered proper english, it's a dialect.

I don't think American accents do much for girls over here. There are always Americans around and everyone is exposed to different American accents on tv, so it is not seen as exotic. As a cultural difference I think American men tend to be more forward which some girls would respond to and that is likely to get you more pull than your accent would.

We generally love the male and female australian and british accents, some dumb ones won't catch a light australian accent but a thick one will definitely be recognized and spark interest.
