They cost a whole $100-$200. They only made 37million+ of these riffles though, so you better pick them up fast!

Mosins are pretty nice, you're not going to get a much louder bang next to your year than a 7.62, unless you want to go into the elephant rounds or deagle regions(though the shotgun AKs are loud as fuck as well)

looked at local places (ok, I lied, I went to Cabellas.com), and you can get a Ruger AR-15 lookalike for under $700, and a Ruger "doesn't really look like a AK-47, but it spits the same ammo" for under $900, so you're right there's no reason to go to "some random guy on the internets" for a $700 rifle.

AR-15 ammo (5.56x45/.223) and AK-47 ammo (7.62x39) are very close power wise.  The AK has a much heavier, but also much slower bullet.

If you're going for big bangs, may I suggest looking at something in a .30-06.  They're twice as powerful as the AK or AR.  They're near the top end power-wise of what's legal to own without needing extra paperwork.

The only 'downside' (if you can consider it that) is aesthetics.  .30-06 rifles will tend to look like 'hunty' rifles, not like 'army' rifles.  Also, your shoulder may regret purchasing the .30-06.

The Mosin round (7.62x54) is up with the .30-06 power wise, so they're also a top gun in the "biggest legal civilian bang" department. 

Personally, I'd still look at the .30-06 cause 'MERICA', but I can't argue with the price or power of those Russian guns.

Edit: had a thought after I wrote this, the Mosin and the .30-06 (as the M1 Garand) were the rounds that won WWII.  You can't really get a better endorsement than that.

NATO uses the 5.56 for most of there guns, which makes it convenient in a situation where you have limited supplies and/or need to be able to use other peoples ammo. granted outside of military combat, video games, books and movies that probably doesn't have much value.

If a gun is good enough to defend the motherland from one of the most OP armys in recent history Its good enough for me. also god damn, $100-$150 is cheep... and the rounds are cheep cheep cheep as well. Only downside is the surplus ammo has salt in it so you HAVE to clean it every time you fire it (which i thought was just good gun maintenance anyhow?) Ill have to see if there are any around town and actually hold one before i buy it.

you know brian you don't have to start with something flashy/pricey.

you could start with something chill like a shotgun or a 30.06 and see what you like about it. or with the various other recommended guns, if you say you're looking to buy I bet someone will let you try theirs.

I just remember rifles and shotguns being a blast (kneeslap). but really, they were fun.

I dont know anyone IRL but aithne's boyfriend that owns anything but a .22 or a 12 gauge. I did get to shot his M4 and glock. That was pretty fun, but I just cant justify the $600 to myself. That is a lot of fun I would need to get out of it to make it worth it.

If you're willing to chamber rounds yourself new 30-06's can be had for about $400, and since the ammo is currently in manufacture, it should be newer less corrosive stuff.

One thought comes to mind, do you have a place to fire such a weapon (my back yard is probably not the right answer, under the right conditions Mosin's and 30-06's can fling lead 5 miles down range.)

It might be worthwhile to join a local sportsman's club and talk to them.  They may have people willing to show you different firearms and make better suggestions than some random guys on the internet, and should also give you access to a proper safe range.

yep. ppl are liable to get paranoid these days if they hear you shooting anywhere near a populated area. it's why gun shows and firing ranges are good for trying stuff

Went to walmart, only crap they had was a hand full of 22 riffles and like 100 shotguns because bird hunting is huge here. Boring as crap. Thanks kenny. There is a town only 30 miles away that has a cabelas (online they sell one) and a gun store that specializes in older guns, so ill check that out sometimes this week i probably.
