That is a serious question that deserves to be answered in song. I am not musical, however. Llamas are granted for a few reasons, including completion of missions, recruiting new members, and ost importantly receiving a post of the day from someone (by pressing the POTD button right above). If you hit your llama link it will bring up the breakdown, and you can further hit the score for sppitting llamas to see which posts got a potd.

I will give you one right now so you can see how it works. Do the same foor me so you can see the other side, and help me beat my creator's ass (Leo).
