I'm probably getting either Bioshock or Oblivion for now.  First of all, does anyone know of any problems either has with Vista?  Yes, I know, Vista sucks, but it is pretty much unavoidable for me, as most games after 2007 will only work on my personal laptop due to graphics, and my computer has a virus known as Windows Vista.  Any other recommendations?  Last time you guys steered me right with Warhammer 40K.

I want a 360, but I don't have the money to blow on it, and my summer job fell through.  And my main problem with Vista is that most games made pre-Vista are shot to hell by it.

Sell your comp and get a PS3. I've heard it can be used as a computer.

when you play oblivion, if you have a good machine I recommend getting some good mods for it.

as far as other games, well, stalker shadow of chernobyl is a nice grungy fps/survivor game

havent' played fallout 3 but the first 2 were classic so it's worth looking into

battleforge is an interesting rts/ccg mix. you can play for free enough to figure out if you like it but eventually to really advance you'll have to spend money on more cards.

mount & blade is kind of a first person, real time rpg... except the actual combat has as much to do with aim and timing the swing of your weapon as with a numerical skill with that weapon vs. the numbers of their armor etc. although in the beginning you can kill/knock unconscious pretty much anything if you hit it when you do 'couched damage' with a couched polearm on while riding fast on a horse, which you aim by steering the horse...
plus, it also handles throwing axes, knives, spears, and firing crossbows and bows, all on foot or from horseback, and blocking with shield, weapons, and unarmed, very intuitively. it's a very low key indy game, although successful. so you'll need to check out the mods, they make a big difference.

and that one ^ is the most fun I've had in a real time first person combat game. a huge running melee through a swirling crowd of mongolian horse archers, trying to nail them down with a jousting lance while arrows and spears whistle by and stick out of whatever they hit, decorating the bodies of fallen riders while their horses flee the field,..... is sexy

LOL I'm kidding I'm not coming back to CN. >_>

Fallout 3. The story is kinda short and it's more like The Elder Scrolls than the first two Fallout's, but it's fun. I'd say go back in time and grab Age of Empires 2, but it doesn't run well in Vista from what I hear. AoE 3 might be an option, but I've never played it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's an idea if you don't mind taking a more roundabout approach.

Go check out Windows 7. I'm usually not a fan of Windows but I've heard good things about it. It's in developmental release right now, which means you can download and run it, kinda like an open beta test.

AoE 3 works well offline with Vista but last time I played online (a few months ago)  I had a huge amount of trouble joining most games and the only soloution I could find was to not use Vista.

yeah, it's one of the most powerfully diverse and deep games out there, but the graphics are ascii characters used for sprites, or nintendo level sprites if you d/l the graphics for it, and the sheer... granularity of the game dynamics, means learning all kinds of shit.

interesting note, I started playing it again a while back, trying to mod in a milkable cow, I even made little sprites for it, but my attempts failed to succeed before I was distracted by another game. I think the problem was, to milk something (like the purring maggot, only animal you can actually milk without a mod) you have to be able to carry it, (bug maybe worked out in next patch?), and to carry an animal you have to put a [vermin] tag in its, uh, source info. I think. in any case I didnt want to do that because then the cats, who are [vermin_hunter] would be attacking and killing the modded 'vermin' cow, at least if it was smaller than them, I thought. besides, carnivorous pets like cats and dogs will rob your traps of whatever they catch from time to time. but apparently to make it work I'll just have to put up with that possibility. if I get undistracted with the other stuff I'm doing...

Milking things doesn't work very well yet. It works, but there's a lot of problems with it (even in vanilla DF, hungry dwarves will often eat your maggots before you can milk them). The game's still in alpha, but both of its modes are very, very playable. The second of these two sub-games, Adventurer mode, hasn't been worked on as much as Fortress mode, but it's worth a quick play-through.

The Adventurer mode is a pseudo-roguelike game in which you can wander the land, slaying beasts and doing quests to slay bigger beasts and visit old fortresses and the like. While it hasn't been worked on nearly as much as Fortress Mode, there's still plenty of things to do here. Regrettably, dragons and the like keep dying off in worldgen, and civilizations aren't with war at each other nearly as often as they should be, so there usually aren't a whole lot of quests to go around, but both of those issues are supposedly getting fixed in the next release some six months off.

The best part of Adventure mode is it fully immerses you in Dwarf Fortress's complex and exceptionally gory battle system (even if most of it is just text descriptions). These are the most violent ASCII characters you will ever encounter. You can literally rip of a baby's right arm, beat him do death with it, and use the resulting dead baby to knock his parents off a cliff (though you might have to get lucky to hit the right body parts). All while you're doing this, the prompt at the bottom reports the battle in bloody detail. I went on a short killing spree to provide some examples.

Here's a battle log from when I gave an elven slave the Black Knight treatment:

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff76/un...er/16699491.png

Battleaxes and internal organs don't mix:
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff76/un...er/5442c1ae.png

I couldn't find a baby to dismember, but I'll take what I can get. Not sure exactly how that would work, but it sounds quite excruciating to experience.
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff76/un...er/03a5f528.png

Granted, it looks difficult to play, but all that's really happening is you're attacking an enemy and hoping something good happens; the target body parts are random unless you're using unarmed combat.
