So I'm looking into getting a gun to shot at stuff at the range in town. Obviously an AK variant would be fun, but they are surprisingly expensive at around $700 from what i can find. M4's are around the same price. And i actually am looking at getting a Deagle, but damn $1700 for a new one seems a bit pricey...though not totally out of the question.
Anyone got an suggestions on a fun and reasonably priced gun that a civilian can own?
-
In some places in the world, you can get an AK for ten dollars.
Use the money you'd save buying an AK from Somalia into a plane ticket and some rations.
-
Also I feel like you live in a state where Walmart would sell AR-15s, so honestly, you might want to check there because they will be on sale this time of the year. I'm completely serious with this post. I'm positive more AR-15s have been sold from WalMart this Black Friday than ever before.
-
I've definitely seen pink AR-15s in Walmart, btw.

they do have a decent selection actually... Ill have to take a closer look now that i am looking to get one...
But you are recommending an AR-15?
And like, look how fucking sexy this thing is though...

Plus with this, you could say you own a god damned hand cannon...

Well, I mean, you started this topic with intentions of getting an AK. If you want an AK, pursue an AK. If you just want a big gun to shoot at stuff with, get the AR-15 at a Walmart and make sure you get the receipt. But, even then, still get the AK.
I think you'll have more fun with an AK, personally. You'll get to know it better than the AR-15, especially in terms of maintenance.
But, I've never shot an AR-15, but I've played with several AKs.

AKM is a modern build. This one is made in the USA. Which I've heard would possibly make it incompatible with certain accessories, but I don't believe that honestly. It doesn't make sense. Besides the obvious accessories.

This gun is made from the same exact design that the IO USA folks use.
-
tbh I don't know why I posted that picture, I don't know what I'm looking at I just thought it'd be helpful
and I don't know a lot about guns, but I'm from Virginia and I've shot more than 20 different guns I'm pretty sure
-
Okay, I talked to my really experienced gun buddy. He says buy an American-made AK. Due to a couple laws, foreign AKs are supposed to have a certain amount of American-made parts before they can be imported, so buying an American-made AK is actually a safer bet.
He also heavily recommends the IO company I linked. He says do NOT buy anything from Century Arms no matter how much you save. They are crap.
-
That actually isn't a bad price at all for the US AK. I have never fired an AK before, just an M4 and a glock. I would definitely want to try out a deagle before i paid 2grand for one and it ended up being a bit to much for me. But then i realize how 2grand for a pistol is just nuts.
-
Ugh, why in the world do you have to sign up to see how you buy one off the IO site?
-
I would imagine the desert eagle isn't that fun to shoot
-
a Desert Eagle is really a 2 handed pistol for 95%+ due to the massive recoil.
-
just because it creates 1,800 ft·lbf doesn't mean i cant hold it in 1 hand...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.50_Action_Express#Performance
also i literally cant figure out how to sign up for the IO sight kenny.
-
Jesus... every 20 shots costs forty fucking dollars...

.223 stuff like AR-15s is pretty common, so you aren't really going to get much cheaper then that. AK also very common, so it's in that same price range.
If you just want to shoot stuff at a range, and have a tight budget, you can always go for .22 LR. Ruger makes some very nice ones that you can get for under $300. And the ammo is cheap enough you can get the gun and your first 1000 rounds for the same cost as the AK or AR.
Of course the con is it's just a 22LR.
-
It's not very fun to shoot for the opposite reason of a Desert Eagle
-
yeah, money isnt a huge issue, I just prefer to get a decent deal on quality stuff then buying one from some random person online for $700 because they say its 'like new'
-
You can get an AK chambered in 5.56, though at the moment I'm not sure it's cheaper ammo than 7.62 since 7.62 isn't commonly used by the military any longer.
-
They seem to be priced fairly close together. And i like bigger bangs, so im not sure what the benefit would be? Its just a smaller round right?

These look fun
-
They cost a whole $100-$200. They only made 37million+ of these riffles though, so you better pick them up fast!
-
Mosins are pretty nice, you're not going to get a much louder bang next to your year than a 7.62, unless you want to go into the elephant rounds or deagle regions(though the shotgun AKs are loud as fuck as well)
-
i like bigger bangs, so im not sure what the benefit would be?
But enough about your obese Asian fetish
-
looked at local places (ok, I lied, I went to Cabellas.com), and you can get a Ruger AR-15 lookalike for under $700, and a Ruger "doesn't really look like a AK-47, but it spits the same ammo" for under $900, so you're right there's no reason to go to "some random guy on the internets" for a $700 rifle.
AR-15 ammo (5.56x45/.223) and AK-47 ammo (7.62x39) are very close power wise. The AK has a much heavier, but also much slower bullet.
If you're going for big bangs, may I suggest looking at something in a .30-06. They're twice as powerful as the AK or AR. They're near the top end power-wise of what's legal to own without needing extra paperwork.
The only 'downside' (if you can consider it that) is aesthetics. .30-06 rifles will tend to look like 'hunty' rifles, not like 'army' rifles. Also, your shoulder may regret purchasing the .30-06.
-
posted before I realized we had a page 2 to read.
The Mosin round (7.62x54) is up with the .30-06 power wise, so they're also a top gun in the "biggest legal civilian bang" department.
Personally, I'd still look at the .30-06 cause 'MERICA', but I can't argue with the price or power of those Russian guns.
Edit: had a thought after I wrote this, the Mosin and the .30-06 (as the M1 Garand) were the rounds that won WWII. You can't really get a better endorsement than that.
-
NATO uses the 5.56 for most of there guns, which makes it convenient in a situation where you have limited supplies and/or need to be able to use other peoples ammo. granted outside of military combat, video games, books and movies that probably doesn't have much value.
-
If a gun is good enough to defend the motherland from one of the most OP armys in recent history Its good enough for me. also god damn, $100-$150 is cheep... and the rounds are cheep cheep cheep as well. Only downside is the surplus ammo has salt in it so you HAVE to clean it every time you fire it (which i thought was just good gun maintenance anyhow?) Ill have to see if there are any around town and actually hold one before i buy it.
-
not reading the whole thread because it's 5 am
you know brian you don't have to start with something flashy/pricey.
you could start with something chill like a shotgun or a 30.06 and see what you like about it. or with the various other recommended guns, if you say you're looking to buy I bet someone will let you try theirs.
I just remember rifles and shotguns being a blast (kneeslap). but really, they were fun.
-
I dont know anyone IRL but aithne's boyfriend that owns anything but a .22 or a 12 gauge. I did get to shot his M4 and glock. That was pretty fun, but I just cant justify the $600 to myself. That is a lot of fun I would need to get out of it to make it worth it.
-
Go to Walmart
-
I have my doubts that Walmart will have a mosen on hand...But i have to stop by walyworld tomorrow anyhow so ill check them out just for you kenny.
-
If you're willing to chamber rounds yourself new 30-06's can be had for about $400, and since the ammo is currently in manufacture, it should be newer less corrosive stuff.
One thought comes to mind, do you have a place to fire such a weapon (my back yard is probably not the right answer, under the right conditions Mosin's and 30-06's can fling lead 5 miles down range.)
It might be worthwhile to join a local sportsman's club and talk to them. They may have people willing to show you different firearms and make better suggestions than some random guys on the internet, and should also give you access to a proper safe range.
-
yep. ppl are liable to get paranoid these days if they hear you shooting anywhere near a populated area. it's why gun shows and firing ranges are good for trying stuff
-
Went to walmart, only crap they had was a hand full of 22 riffles and like 100 shotguns because bird hunting is huge here. Boring as crap. Thanks kenny. There is a town only 30 miles away that has a cabelas (online they sell one) and a gun store that specializes in older guns, so ill check that out sometimes this week i probably.
found their facebook page... this is the sort of place that looks like they would have one.
