Hey there, so I'm not the most hardware minded person. I need help making a computer from scratch, all I know right now is a price ceiling of about $1000 USD, can go over, if anyone can help, even by asking questions so I can get thinking in the right direction, thanks.
edit: Looking at intel right now, probably the i5 processor but not set in stone. :rainbowsheep:
Edit2: this is for my brother, not myself.
-
Motherboard... memory... cpu... hard drive(s)... video card... chassis... fans/cooling things... power stuff...
I don't know shit about computers, so that's all you get.
-
haha, I don't know shit about hardware, my brother wants intel though, so that means an nvidia graphics card, but thats getting ahead of everything,
First thing needed is a motherboard. he is looking at the i5 processor right now.
-
always buy 1 step down from the cutting edge, the previous generation of hardware is just as fast as the latest thing, but has more support and is 1/3rd the price
-
Processor: Intel i5 2500k -$230
Motherboard: Asus P8Z68-V LE -$140
Graphics Card: Asus 560Ti 1 GB DDR -$250
Hard Disk: 1 TB Seagate 7200 rpm -$130
Ram: 4GB X 2 1600MHZ Corsair -$60
Cabinet: Cooler Master 690 II plus -$85
PSU/SMPS: 500-550 watts -$75
total about $970
I excluded the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
This config should run most new games at High easily, not ultra... at least not easily.
If you're feeling a bit adventurous, add an ssd. That'll make shit UBER fast.

A 64 gig kingston or some such.

...You have no idea how funny this is.
He wants to get a case first with bitchin' LEDs and build the comp around that.

Study these two pages well:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106.html (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106.html)
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107.html (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107.html)
On the CPU side, you're quite right going with the i5.
on the other side of things though, don't think choosing an Intel CPU locks you to NVidia, there are a number of good performing Radeon cards on the graphics list

This is exactly me. Except it took me ages to figure out that the cpu and graphics card were different things.

like Gang's computer, it still needs KB mouse and monitor, however I managed to cram a SSD into the mix, which like he said, will make it Uber-fast

and now sometimes they're the same, many CPUs have graphics built in - just not very good ones.
Also, Croix, the above build is running on the assumption this will be primarily a gaming machine. Typically the biggest thing on game machines is getting a good graphics card (like Ogaden said, a level or two under top is good, you can pay $500 for NVidia's top card, but is it really worth it?) Fast CPU helps, but if you have to make a choice, sacrifice on the CPU first.

Dear PC Peasant,
The replies coming to you might be a bit much, so read this on how to build a gaming machine from 500$ to 2000$:
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/build_pc_any_budget_three_builds_500_2000 (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/build_pc_any_budget_three_builds_500_2000)
MaximumPC is the bible.

I'll pass this along, looks good.

Yay fancy lights on your computer that'll distract you when you're trying to game!

Pshh...females...
-
No lights on my machine, but when I crank it up, it puts out enough heat to be visible on IR wavelengths from space.

I bet if you'd open those hard drives up you'd probably find a cheap flash drive and a couple of lug nuts.
-
harddrive I bought from ebay was dead
Well, no shit. Never would have expected that.

Are you a retard, child, or sexy woman? If so, please consider a console or an Apple product.
I can use my computer to fry eggs. From one room away. I get a distinct IR tan after a session of BF3.
