My windows laptop runs without a firewall (other then router), I install all kinda of random bullshit from shady parts of the internet, I don't have any sort of active anti-virus (I just scan every so often), I watch all kinda of free porn from the shady bits of the internet. Its been 3.5 months since I scanned last... nothing to report in the virus category...
I don't get how normal people get them but I don't, so long as its not called 'superantivirus2012.exe' I'll install it without a second thought if it claims to do what I'm looking for.
I guess what I'm trying to ask is what am I doing wrong?

I have to fix people's computers all the time because of that shit, but i have no firewall/av and i never have any issues.

I don't download things that are called super crap virus, and do all of this and have norton for an antivirus ffs, and I dont ever get viruses either.

It means you've got a good firewall on your router.
If you wanna try to get a virus, set yourself into the router's DMZ and forward all incoming ports through your laptop. I guarantee a virus by the end of next week.
-
I somehow dont think my 8 year old actiontech router has much of of a firewall... Also, i had my laptop set to my DMZ for months because its easier then port forwarding on my router...
and I think in the past 4 years the only things ive ever gotten was when i installed cracks or keygens (which i dont think average people do to get their virus's)
although, it did just hit me i have all sorts of addons for my firefox for security... but that all amounts to no xss attakcs and using HTTPS when its available...
-
Well, the virus I got was from a popup, and the one my dad got was because he accidently installed antispyware2012
-
that wasnt a critique of people who get them btw... i was seriously asking that question because i dont understand it.

I'm offended by your criticism of me and demand an apology.
-
i apologize for my criticism of you and. now stop derailing my thread
-
That's not a good enough apology.
I LIKE CAEK!

It is entirely possible you have some better-disguised malware lurking somewhere; botnets work better when they don't impact your computer in any noticeable fashion, which would prompt you to take steps to remove them. What software do you use to do regular scans?
-
they recognize you as one of them. [/thread]
-
i use maelware bytes and the free windows security one. i just scan with them, no real time protection.

CAEK is a lie!

Cake is not a lie. Cake is a lie is a lie.

Malwarebytes is probably the best on-demand scanner. If it's not finding anything you're probably good, though that doesn't rule out malware specifically targeted at the program (there was a nasty Vundo variant that would utterly destroy MBAM users). MSE is an acceptable double-checker, though I usually prefer to have one on-demand and one real-time to handle threats. I can't remember the last time I had a hit that wasn't a false positive though.
-
I can only remember getting one virus in the last 4 years or so, and that was because flash sucks. I don't necessarily go to shady sites and download random shit all the time, but I'm not actively trying to avoid viruses either.

I all ways have him "glove up" and only have 3 ways with females I know to be clean. you know frinds for years

Amazingly, I actually encountered a virus today, AVG blocked it before the site even loaded via SurfShield and popped up an alert. Was looking up lyrics for something.
-
Surprised AVG catches anything. I haven't had any issues since I started running NotScripts (chrome version of NoScript). Avast catches one every once in a while.
I've had bouts with other peoples computers who run bare bones IE.
-
thats probably it tbh jenne. herp derp, i run XP SP1 becasue i hate updating, and i use IE 6 because who needs newer/better right guys?
-
People fuck up their computers hardcore typically because they are running with as a user with Admin privileges.
Chrome is even designed to be installed without Admin privileges.
These steps make malicious software damage minimal.
When Mac (and anyone using Unix oxshit) users jump up and down about their security, this is really the only thing they are talking about.
Yeah, IE6 was bad and dumb. But, most of the people who were complaining, were running that piece of shit as an administrator.
Then went on to use Firefox as administrators.
Then complained about Windows Vista/7 UAC.
-
vista sucked.
-
Question your sources and use a firewall to block key ports and you will be hard pressed to get a virus or a rootkit. If all you do is surf for queer porn with your machine, then it is not like you are risking all of your data - your potential to lose is limited. If you have all your shit on the same computer, and then go to Brian's favourite sites, you are playing russian roulette.

My experience with viruses I got badtrans.b virus back on windows 98 from auto download preview pane outlook express explioit, and then brother clicked on rogue internet security 2010 from yahoo infected javscript popup ads, also I think it took all my porn and picture files and morphed them together then posted them on the site I visited which was really weird anyone ever heard of a virus trojan morphing porn videos/pictures together ????
found this a few days ago good tool for idiots like myself TCPView http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437)

Last virus attack that i faced was a nasty mother called Chernobyl, back in 1998. Or thereabouts. I also remember where i got it from. It was a game demo that i downloaded off of a reputable website. What it did was basically screw up my computer BIOS and really trash my HDD.
Currently running MCAfee something.
