Title: llamavore\s daring survival stories VOL21

So this happened. I was biking home from 34th/archer. crossed one intersection where the timer was giving me right of way, but the guy wasn't looking so I was worried. was saying 'I have right of way, i have right of way.' he stayed put.

So I was like, wow, I must be tense about getting hit. Thinking, how many times have I nearly gotten hit at intersections... 3? 4? etc. etc. brain making small talk with itself as I approach another intersection. This one is blind and there's basically Never anyone coming out of it.

Little silver car hurtling toward me about 40 mph trying to make the light. POP QUIZ HOT SHOT. slammed brakes, sharp turn, wipe out, landed on elbow, brushed against car, inches away. All in 2 seconds. I don't think she even saw me til I stood up and gave her the universal farewell with both hands. so close.

Someone walking their dog was there to console me. The driver came back and apologized. I told her making the light wasn't worth hitting someone. and not to worry about it. I think I was in shock, stared at my bike for a while, like I had just forgotten how to put the chain back on the gears. Somehow neither me nor the bike are damaged, except my arm is sore from landing on it.

Almost exhilarating. certainly an eye-opener. still forgetting to breathe lol

happened about an hour ago

At least you were in the street. I want to beat sidewalk bikers to death.

I was on the sidewalk, but it wouldn't have made a difference. she was speeding to catch a light, I was probably going too fast too given she had the light. but also there was a fence concealing both of us from eachother until we were about 3 yards off. ridiculous. no wonder bikers get hit so much in this town.

anyway I am rewarding my cat-like reflexes by telling everyone, especially people that don't care, and eating low carb ice cream treats and watching gravity, anyone want to come over

low carb ice cream? Sounds like place with higher risk for AIDS than I'm ever used to fearing.

I am on a diet though.

Finally, someone that eats low-carb ice cream. Type 1 diabetics can feel so alone sometimes.

I mean, it doesn't stop me from eating like a pig, since I can just take the insulin for it, but it's a pain in the ass to do a needle every time you want a snack.

Were you wearing a helmet, or are you just too cool for words?

I do not possess a bike helmet

Do you wear an ass-guard? People's anatomy is different.

I can only imagine. I have had to go through a lot of obnoxious health regimens with various chronic problems. What brand do you like for ice cream? I tried the publix brand but I'm pretty sure they cut corners with their ingredients. think I'll stick to breyer's. or 'SO Delicious'

there was only the one story. vol 22 is probably never coming out unless ppl throw money at me to motivate me.

I think I might get a helmet considering some of the things people have gone through after getting hit.

I go with Chapman's, which is a big brand north of the border. They make pretty good low-carb products.

May I ask what health problem makes you eat low carb ice cream? Is avoiding it altogether an option?

We must safeguard the font of llama-posting that is llama's brain, with a brain safeguarding helmet

Yes. It is precious, such as it is.

We should also look at protecting his fingers and lips (in case his fingers don't make it, he could still dictate or type like Hawkings).

How much duct tape do you figure we need?

I used to go biking a lot back in the day, i made a similar blind turn once and on the other side was a car apparently trying to drift at high speeds. I hit it dead on.
I stayed on the bike, my feet still on the pedals, my hands still on the handlebars, and i felt the back of my bike starting to rise, before i knew it, with my front tire pinned to the ground, the back of my cycle had risen to an 80 degree angle with the ground.
It felt like i stayed there for a while. Neatly suspended off the ground, looking at the driver looking at me looking at him... and then, slowly, almost casually, the back of the bike came back down...when it hit the ground, i barely felt a shock... I just sat there. On my bike, with the front tire kissing the front bumper of the car, smack dab in the middle of it. And me, my bike, and the car, all undamaged...
All this happened in about the time it takes to swallow a gulp of water...water that i needed as i rode away and it slowly dawned on me how lucky i was, as the bile rose in my throat...

I used to bike furiously in the summer heat. Mesmerized by the glint of hot pavement and babes. I was fit. I was fast. I was aggressive. I was imprudent. I thought everyone should get a good look at my ass, even if I wouldn't let them touch it. I did not wear a helmet.

One day I was biking down Jarry blvd on my way home from my dreary job. I was 3 klicks into a 32 klick journey home. Some creeper opened his car door without looking. I saw him just in time (or so I thought). Being acutely aware of my environment, I knew there was no car to my left, so I weaved. The tip of my right handlebar caught the edge of his door, and I was certainly doing 30 kph on a light downhill slope. I was thrown from my bike into the lane  to my left, and whacked the back of my head, scraping my elbow and knee.

Like a cartoon, I saw stars, and before my vision came back with any clarity, I rolled over to the right. A 10-wheeler rolled over where I was less than a second later - no way it could have stopped. I was lucky - the hit I took could just as well have knocked me unconscious, and if that had happened for even a second, I would have been dead.

It took me 45 mins until I stopped shaking, and could deal with the pain enough to bike home, a little slower and cautiously than before.

Being young, invincible, and too cool to wear a helmet, I told everybody about it with some alarm, and kept behaving as I always did. You know, because it was the other guy's fault - he was the creeper, not me. I had to age a little before understanding that his life was never really on the line.

Looking back on it now, I would estimate that I suffered a little brain damage, which explains why I am in the RIA today.

May I ask what health problem makes you eat low carb ice cream? Is avoiding it altogether an option?

Type 1 diabetic. Which means I am dependent on insulin to survive (I take Novorapid and Lantus). Thus, when I eat anything with carbohydrates, I need to balance it out appropriately with an injection, which is a pain in the ass. So, if I can keep my carb intake under 10g for a snack, it's preferable, because I don't have to take the extra needle. That said, I'm a diet pop addict.

Man diabetes sounds like a pain in the ass. I know it runs in my family, and I am likely to develop it at some point. Now I have kids, and I guess they might have an even bigger chance of having it since it runs in my wife's family as well.

I should read up more about it - can you recommend a good resource?

It's important, GrilledSlug, to differentiate between Type I and Type II.  What you are describing sounds like Type II.

Some decent resources:
Diabetes Education Online
http://dtc.ucsf.edu/types-of-diabetes/type2/understanding-type-2-diabetes/ (http://dtc.ucsf.edu/types-of-diabetes/type2/understanding-type-2-diabetes/)

American Diabetes Association
http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/type-2/ (http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/type-2/)

National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse
http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/DM/pubs/type2_ES/index.aspx (http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/DM/pubs/type2_ES/index.aspx)

These articles will pretty much tell you the same things, so pick the one you are most comfortable with.

I was on a Cozmo pump when I was younger. I switched off it because I was immature and would forget to do my boluses. Now that I'm more responsible, I'm looking at the Animas Vibe with the CGM system. My problem now is that I can't afford it, and my diabetes specialist is a metaphoric glucose nazi who won't sign for any health benefits or government pump funding unless your sugars are perfect.

I want to go on one pretty bad now.

I had slightly better control with the GMS, but it tore up my stomach.  I told the endochronologist to go fuck himself if he wanted to me to keep wearing that shit.

getting off of excess carbs is just generally a good idea though. In the ancient world men had to worry about saber-toothed tigers. Now we have to worry about poisoning ourselves with an over abundance of food-like-material created by parasitic super-organisms known as corporations
