Title: What are you drinking?
Post by: Jenne on September 02, 2012, 01:52:36 am
I've always liked this topic on other forums, but I'm way too lazy to visit other forums anymore, so I'm starting one here.

Here's what I picked up tonight

Good staple beer
(http://thefourfirkins.com/_uls/resources/moose.jpg)

Excellent stuff.  It's too bad they only make this in the fall.  But I'm generally impressed with the brewery as a whole.

Has Founders ever made a bad beer?

Have never had this, but am excited to try it.  I'm a big fan of irish whiskey, so i thought I would give this a try.  Was more expensive that I would normally like to spend ($40), but it was kinda a birth day spurge.  I love regular Bushmills, so I have high hopes.

I've been considering a venture into Scotch.  I have little experience in the area, so I am looking for suggestions.  I've only had Chivas and did not like that at all.  Had more to do with the mouth feel than anything else.  I know it's a blend, so that may have had something to do with it.

Like I said above, I love Irish whiskey, so I'm hoping there is something than can help make the transition.

Founders FTW, go down to their brewery every couple of weeks since its downtown of the city i live in.

Barenjager, smoothest honey liqueur you'll ever have.

Russian standard Vodka

Same makers as the Moose Drool.  Not bad.  Somewhere between a wheel and a lager.

Supposed to be a pale ale, but has little to no flavor.  Very disappointed considering how good the brown is.

Can't really go wrong with anything Stone.  Very smokey, with a deep porter taste.

Should have posted these a week ago.

I recent bought a Stone pint glass, so had to break it in proper like.

Lagunitas - Little Sumpin Sumpin Ale.  I absolutely love this beer.  Were is not $10.99 a six, I'd drink it all the time.  There are a couple other version of this (Little Sumpin Extra and Little Sumpin Wild) I have yet to try, but will buy the second I see them.

If you enjoy the taste of Captain Morgan and also enjoy saving money, try this spiced rum out.  Mix with coke, it tastes delicious and you still have a fistful of dollars for sniffers row.

Not quite as good as Fullers London Pride, but $14 per 12 rather than $11per six.

Until I saw this pic, I never realized this was a Scotch Ale.  It surprises me because I have not really liked the scotch ales I have had before, but I really love this beer.

BTW which whisky would you suggest to go with a Montecristo No. 5?

The best whiskey that I've had is ganster, literally.  It was made during the prohibition and was a favorite of Al Capone.    Each bottle is hand labeled and is sold on a limited basis, but if you can find it, it's delicious.

edit:  $35.99 for a fifth (U.S.)

If you like McGuillicuddy's and Red Bull, aka, Cherry Bomb's you'll love this.  It tastes exactly the same but will save you money.  BTW, Cherry Bombs are delicious and not that potent, so your girls will like them too.  These go down smooth and are great shots for parties with the ladies or when you want to do a shot with your boys but not get too messed up.

This had very little flavor.  American style pale ales are much less hoppy than IPA's in general, but this was significantly lacking.

Good flavor, but the consistency was wrong.  Very thin for an outmeal stout.

Extremely strong coffee flavor.  Not my favorite style, but had to try it.

Spiced apple wine made by semi local winery.  Not bad, reminds me a sweeter version of the gluhwein we get at the german christmas festival every year.

Only recently available year round here in the midwest.  I have always loved this beer.  One of my favorite bars back in NY serves Smithwicks on a nitrogen pour.  It's nothing short of awesome.

I've always been curious about Scotch, but never dabbled much.  I'd had Chivas back in college and really didnt like it.  But, I am really liking the Glenlivet.

So now that I have had my eyes opened, what else should I try?

Never been a Scotch man I cant give you any advice but I did come up with my own drink and it is quite delicious. I got myself a bottle of Absolute Mango vodka and mixed it with Red Bull.  I call it.....wait for it......an Electric Mango.   Hey-yo!  But seriously it was like a mouth full of awesome.

You can't make a statement like that until you have a Guinness in Dublin, and taste the trappist beers of Belgium.

Micro breweries are definitely the way to go in North America - it ensures no preservatives, and a PH balanced for the local water source.  But they can't hold a candle to similarly brewed beers, in their local environment, which also don't have preservatives, and have found appeal in an audience of millions...

Way out of date on updated this.

Continuing my Scotch experiment.  It's good, but I'd have to say I still prefer the Glenlivit.

I went back east, at least a couple states, for Thanksgiving.  As I do whenever I get that way, I had to pick up some Yuengling.  Not a great beer, but good and very cheep.  Picked up both the Lager and the Black & Tan.

(http://www.beer-universe.com/images/articles/399/Yuengling%20Traditional%20Lager.jpg)(http://gastrotraveling.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Yuengling-Black-Tan-226x300.jpg)

It's christmas beer time again, so of course I have to start with the Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g6qmgvR0uu0/Trh0UaEGBxI/AAAAAAAAAkg/wi2mqNttHCQ/s1600/celebration.jpg)

Also had the Southern Tier 2Xmas.  Very strong spice flavor.  Kinda odd.  Certainly would not want more than one at a time.

Hadn't had anything new in a while, but this weekend went exploring again.

Deschutes - Chainbreaker White IPA - I had never heard of the brewery, or the style for that matter, so I had to give it a try.  I was pleasantly surprised.  Is more of a Whit than an IPA, but you do get notes of the hoppiness.  All in all, a good entry IPA.

New Belgium - Rolle Bolle - Summer Ale with  monk fruit and soursop, whatever the hell that is.  Taste is as strange as the name

New Belgium - Rampant Imperial IPA - As the name implies, serious hops.  Tastes a lot like Ranger, just stronger.

Way over due for an update

Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier - The worlds oldest brewery makes a damn fine hefe
Sprecher Hard Root Beer - About what you would expect.  Sweet with a malt after taste.
Goose Island Octoberfest - Typical generic american version of an October.  Ok, but nothing special.
Victory Headwaters Pale Ale - Good stuff.  Not as hoppy as Hop Devil, but hoppy enough with good flavor.

Damn, I clearly need to get my shit together.  I've been very lazy at updating this.

Anyway, here is what I bought today

Sierra Nevada  - Narwhal - It's an Imperial Stout, and it's all of that.  Not as impressive as others I have had, but still good
Alesmith - Anvil ESB - Pretty generic ESB.  Not a whole lot of flavor
Alesmith - Nut Brown - Have not tried this one yet
Port Brewing - Old Viscosity - I am highly intrigued by this one.  Another imperial stout, but supposed to be as thick as motor oil.  It't won't be, but will be interesting.  The Santa's Little Helper Russian Imperial Stout is excellent, so I have high hopes.
Founders - Breakfast Stout - Not my favorite from Founders, but I bought it for the wife who loves it.  Coffee, coffee, coffee flavor.
The Lost Abbey - Inferno Ale - Heard good things about this brewery so I thought I would give them a try.  This one seem to be the best style for me to start with, being a Strong Ale.  Another one I have high hopes on.

I am noticing a pretty big gap, so I will try to fill in based on the highlights I can recall

Alesmith - Evil Deal Red - Bought it just for the name, and got about what I expected
Alesmith - Speedway Stout - This beer is amazing.  It's currently Rate Beer #8, with one of the ones above it being a barrel aged version of this beer.

That's just silly.

Never mind anyone else's uninformed tastebuds, this is hands-down the best beer on earth.  Wesvleteren is a Belgian Trappist beer, and the monks only make it when they need money.  It is amazing - every sip tastes different.  The only way to get it is to call the monastery directly, and book a 2-4.  They will only answer the phone if they need money.  If you call twice in 15 minutes, they automatically block your phone number for 24 hours.  If you do manage to get an order through, it takes 2-4 weeks for them to prepare it.  Then they call you 48 hours before it is ready, and advise you of your 30 minute window in which to pick it up (ie Tuesday the 119th from 2:30 to 3pm).  The same car is not permitted access to the grounds twice in a month.  If you challenge them on any of these rules, their response is invariably, "Temperance, my son."

Normally such rediculous exclusivity and Belgian red tape would disinterest me, but I took up the challenge because my brother would be visiting me a few months down the road.  After 3 months of not making headway, I checked e-bay, and found a case (a 2-4, eh?) for 598 Euros (ie 750 USD), so I looked elsewhere.  I found a shop in Brussels, called "De Bier Tempel", and sauntered in.  I asked the shopkeeper if he had Westvleteren, and he pulled away, darting his eyes toward the other patron in the small store.  Once she left, he leaned in, and said, "You Americans [Fuck you creeper, I thought] should learn to be more discreet.  How many do you want?  Quickly."  He is not supposed to resell it, and there is an underground economy to get your hands on this shit.  I left with the beer in brown paperbags and a carboard box, feeling like I just bought a sex video.  He sold me 12 bottles for a sum I would have been ashamed to admit I paid until I tasted the stuff with my brother.  Every sip of my 6 bottles tasted different and distinct.  Incredible.  And fucking strong.  We ended the evening complimenting each other on the gracious way with which each of us wiped the drool from our chins.

I will do it all over again.  If this is not a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is.

No hangover whatsoever, and downing 6 of these babies is like having 18 Buds.  Without running to the washroom every 5 minutes.

I will do it all over again.  If this is not a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is.

Fair enough.  I spent a winter loading pipe outside in Alberta, wondering what I did wrong to pull that duty.  Turn out what I did was be new.
