because the general population is much much more aware of youtube, therefore branding it a criminal organization wouldn't be tolerated.

That mostly explains why they were such a huge target. As well as the possibility that they did it just to piss off people who oppose the SOPA/PIPA bills.

Regardless of what you think of piracy, money laundering is against the law. Furthermore, while I personally am against the MPAA and all that, I'm not against them in theory. I mean, I think we can all agree that the concept of intellectual property is fair; in my opinion, it's just overcharging that's the issue. But the flagrancy with which Megauploads disregarded intellectual property removes any sympathy I have for them.

Read the gizmodo article. It does a very good job of explaining the whole situation, and seems to me as unbiased as you're going to get.
