i talked with kenny about it on discord. And he said either centOS or debian. And after thinking about it for a while Debian would be the simplest to maintain if i were to get hit by a bus. as forever more you could just run the updater and be current.

Lol, lucky me then. I broke the forums a few times today. Though the first wasn't my fault exactly... I should have prevented it before it even happened in the first place. But not exactly my fault.
As for pros and cons of different choices...
CentOS is the free version of RedHat. Lots of support, good security record. If for whatever reason I die, someone could pick up and upkeep the server without too much learning. A solid choice overall id say.
Debian is THE server when it comes to free hosting, the granddaddy of them all. Most distributions are based off Debian in some way because tons are based directly off Debian, and tons more are based on Ubuntu, which is Debian based. A nearly infinite amount of support and flexibility. But it's old and boring because they exclusively use old software for stability reasons. Again, if I were to die, you could update and keep the server running without any real issues.
FreeBSD Very lightweight base OS, another step up in stability and reliability to any of the linuxs. Generally considered to be an order of magnitude more secure than Linux. Its something I've been using a lot lately and while its a challenge to get set up, once it is its good to go and you would just have to log in and type "pkg upgrade" and hit yes.
Personally... I'm conflicted which is why I wanted some input since it's not just my playtoy, it's our home.
And another option is to just keep putting bandaids over things forever and over.

So the MySQL we use for this forum is old and outdated, still works decent but there are a few backend issues that are un-solvable without moving to a new version. There are a few other issues as well that have been slowly stacking up over the years. Anyhow long story short How do you guys want to move off Ubuntu to some other server? Perhaps CentOS or Debian? Mabey even FreeBSD if I'm feeling extra crazy... Thoughts, concerns?
