Losers

Roman Abramovich
The life of a billionaire is over-rated. Poor Roman Abramovich may be one of the richest men in the world but he is still reduced to earning a living like the rest of us. The demands of "business" precluded him from attending the Champions League semi-final at Anfield in midweek and, four days later, he was still being detained in Russia by work. Given that Roman is worth £11billion - and has a choice of private jets in which he could have been flown in and out of England and back to his homeland in a matter of hours - it must have been very, very substantial business that kept him away.

Either that or disillusionment has set in and he is losing interest.

Manchester United
Only by beating Barcelona can the champions reach the Champions League final, and only if they beat both Wigan and West Ham can they be sure of retaining their title. Which is the worrying context of their current run of two wins in six games.

Sir Alex Ferguson
Even in its small print, Ferguson's post-match rant was comprehensively flawed - Carrick's proximity to the touchline was immaterial to the legitimacy of the decision, the ball was travelling towards Wes Brown and Didier Drogba rather than Rio Ferdinand, and it would have been outrageous had Alan Wiley ignored the linesman given that the latter official had an unparalleled view of the incident.

On a macro level, it was flawed first and foremost because the penalty award was warranted. Yet Ferguson's tirade was as much an error of judgement as it was of interpretation.

Rather than shrug off the setback with a reminder that United are still in pole position, Ferguson's rant - in partnership with his assistant's paranoid ramblings - instead fuelled belief that United are wilting under the strain. Ferguson's bitterness must have also been a factor in the United players' resentful response - reportedly, "we'll run where we f**king like" - upon being requested by the Chelsea groundstaff to move to a different section of the Stamford Bridge pitch. A siege mentality? No, just mental.

Ferguson's work this week has certainly lacked coherent thought. His team selection in Barcelona was plainly wrong and on Saturday he found a strange time to field a weakened team in the Premier League. Wasn't this fixture, in Ferguson's words, "unquestionably the biggest of the season"? One explanation for why Ferguson omitted a raft of first-teamers is that he wanted a valid excuse if Chelsea did prevail. Yet if it was a calculated snub to Chelsea, the perceived insult apparently galvanised United's opponents and Ferguson's post-match raving ensured that a non-story became the biggest talking point of the year.

Perhaps Ferguson simply wanted to rest his star players before the return leg with Barcelona, but, if that was the case, why was Wayne Rooney included given that he was already struggling with a hip injury that he duly aggravated? Inadvertently, his selection thus revealed just how critically Ferguson regards Ronaldo to his side's cause. The Scot bristles at the barb that United are a one-man team but over the last week he has provided trenchant evidence to endorse that view, not least by "sacrificing" Rooney as a midfield backtracker in the Nou Camp so that Ronaldo could operate centrally.

That United failed to offer a threat worthy of the word in Spain was a consequence of the Portuguese forward enduring a rare off-day. On Saturday, his day off coincided with United failing to work Petr Cech until Rooney accepted Ricardo Carvalho's gift and scored with the visitors' first shot on goal. In the 27 minutes Ronaldo was on the pitch he thus inspired five of the six shots on goal that United produced all day.

If that is a disconcerting thought for United, the truth is that it is inspiration from their manager from which they are currently lacking.

Rio Ferdinand
Never mind the question of whether this is the appropriate behaviour of a candidate to be the next England captain, a professional footballer should not be kicking walls or missing a non-moving target.

Alan Wiley
If referees want respect they should earn it. His linesman may have possessed the courage to step into the limelight but Wiley's craven failure to dismiss Owen Hargreaves for obvious and bellowed dissent was yet another unacceptable betrayal of the profession by a Premier League elite.

Yakubu
Suffering from his usual end-of-season famine - although, considering that he didn't score in his last 16 games of 2005/06 or in his last 12 games of 2006/07, Yakubu's current run of one goal in ten games is prolific by his usual post-March standard.

Jari Litmanen
Even though he was brought to Fulham without a fee, Litmanen deserves a mention whenever the list of this season's flops is compiled. His spell at Craven Cottage began bleakly when, within two weeks of arrival, he returned to his native Finland suffering from heart palpitations, has included precisely zero first-team appearances in return for his weekly £15,000 wage, and was annulled last week when he was knocked out in training by a stray clearance by reserve goalkeeper Ricardo Batista. "It was like a missile," exclaimed an unusually animated Roy Hodgson as way of explanation.

Abou Diaby
To the lengthy list of Gunners players ruled out for the rest of the season can be added the name of Abou Diaby.

While the club still refuse to admit that Denilson was ruled out for two months because of his involvement in a practice match against Colorado Rapids in February, they have at least admitted that Diaby's problem was a consequence of the midfielder playing in a reserve match in which he was supposed to be acquiring much-needed playing time after serving a three-match domestic suspension.

Yet Arsenal remain a club in denial. Their website currently carries an interview with the dejected Frenchman in which it is stated that, until Monday night's setback, 'the former Auxerre midfielder was counting this as his first injury-free season after his move in January 2006'. Oh really? Tomas Rosicky's absence since late January should have presented Diaby with a prolonged opportunity to impress but instead the ensuing four months have revealed his own brittleness. The two matches he managed to start between February and April - against Manchester City and AC Milan - resulted in two separate muscle strains each requiring a month's recuperation, and his return to first-team action at Bolton on 29 March lasted 30 minutes before he was dismissed.

Wigan Athletic
Only Derby County have scored fewer goals in the Premier League this season than the parasites of the JJB.

Premier League Weekend Winners And Losers

Winners

Chelsea
Credit where it is due. Chelsea were excellent against the leaders, delivering the best performance of the season. One salient reason why the vast majority of neutral observers have scoffed at Manchester United's complaints over the penalty award against Michael Carrick is that, aside from appreciating the legitimacy of the decision, it produced the victory warranted by the home side's display and outlook.

United, by contrast, paid a fair price for arriving in west London with a draw the summit of their ambition. If that caution was out of character, their performance was in keeping with their general out-of-form lethargy for the past month. Ferguson, unfortunately for United, is only deepening that slump by resorting to Chelsea-like conservatism. Had he encouraged positive intent in the Nou Camp, and collected an away goal, then he could have selected a stronger - if not his strongest - team at Stamford Bridge.

It's still United's title to lose. The problem is that, having collected five points from their last four games, they have no more slips to make before their advantage is completely surrendered.

Michael Ballack

It may be perceived as crass to dwell on how Ballack prospered without Frank Lampard given the reasons for his colleague's absence, yet the fact of the matter is that five of the German's six league goals this term have occurred in matches that Lampard has missed. In a 4-3-3 formation including a holding midfield, there should be room for both to thrive provided they don't trip over each other when making the sort of run that led to Ballack's opening goal. The reason for Ballack's improvement in Lampard's absence is probably more psychological than tactical - he is a player who thrives on responsibility, as clearly demonstrated when he rammed in the penalty that ensures the title race will run until the final weekend of the season.

Fulham
The fight goes on at the bottom as well as the top of the table. The Cottagers host Birmingham next weekend in the latest relegation six-pointer, although anything less than three for Fulham will be insufficient. Birmingham will rue their failure to beat an under-strength Liverpool side - Yossi Benayoun's deflected equaliser hit the back of the net at almost exactly the moment that Danny Murphy put Fulham level at Manchester City - and given that they were effectively handed three points when a disinterested and similarly weakened Tottenham visited St Andrews' ahead of March's UEFA Cup tie in Eindhoven, their relegation will hardly be a corruption of the league's integrity.

Peter Crouch
Liverpool have to score at Chelsea - a feat they haven't achieved at Stamford Bridge in their last eight visits to west London - on Wednesday night if they are to progress to the Champions League so Crouch had a strong case for inclusion even before scoring at Birmingham - his third goal in his last three starts.

Roque Santa Cruz
The scorer of more away goals than any other top-flight player this term.

Tottenham Hotspur
Even though Spurs failed to win at the weekend - they've actually won just two of their 12 matches since beating Chelsea in the Carling Cup final - they will have the demeanour of victors after announcing the £16m signing of Luka Modric on Saturday morning.

While the clamour that greeted the announcement was primarily based on what has been have heard about Modric rather than what has been seen, it is nonetheless impossible to deny that the Croatian's capture is a major coup. It also rubbished the rumour that Ramos - whose spending since replacing Martin Jol has now reached the £40m mark - would have to sell before he could buy again. Yet the joy of the Tottenham support should be tempered by Modric's arrival coinciding with the first admission from Ramos that Dimi Berbatov could leave.

Rotund Footballers Cheating
Birmingham's ploy of using Radhi Jaidi to distract the opposition's goalkeeper was so blatant this weekend that even Match of the Day managed to spot it. The tactic has been used before, most noticeably against Everton when the defender (presumably picked for the task on account of his considerable bulk) stood in front of Tim Howard, waving his arms around and blocking the American's line of sight as Mauro Zárate prepared to take his match-saving free-kick."If you want my personal opinion, I don't think the referees and linesmen in the Premier League are going to have enough gumption to disallow a goal on the basis of that," reflected Howard prophetically.

Sebastian Larsson's goal against Liverpool was allowed to stand, despite Jaidi clearly seeking to gain an advantage from an offside position and interfering with play. And even if he were not offside, his actions should have been deemed ungentlemanly conduct.

As this column warned two weeks ago, this trick will fester unless it is properly dealt with. The ultimate response will be for officialdom to ignore it until another goal is scored in such a fashion...and then disallow it.

Sunderland
Avoiding relegation to stay in the Premier League is a lucrative business. For Sunderland, it could be exceedingly expensive - Roy Keane has demanded a £50m transfer kitty this summer and warned that he is "quite happy to let my contract run out" if it isn't forthcoming.

Cesc Fabregas still believes Arsenal could snatch the Premier League title.

The result took the Gunners to within four points of Chelsea and Manchester United with two games remaining.

Fabregas told Setanta Sports: "Nothing is impossible. We have to win the last two games and then we'll see. We are not the favourites, but you never know."

The midfielder also paid tribute to Adebayor, adding: "He makes a difference every time he plays, he's a striker who can do everything. We should feel fortunate to have him."

WENGER HAILS ADEBAYOR

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hailed the heroics of hat-trick hero Emmanuel Adebayor - and then admitted he would have been happy had the striker scored half of this season's goal tally.

Adebayor reached 30 for the campaign with three goals in a stunning second-half performance in his side's 6-2 victory over Derby at Pride Park - his second against the relegated Rams this term after netting the same number in September's 5-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.

The difference this time was he did it in the space of 45 minutes, having entered the field as a replacement for Robin van Persie - who was replaced as a precaution - with his side 2-1 ahead.

There was nothing particularly eye-catching about his first two goals, both were simple tap-ins from inside the six-yard box, but Adebayor showed considerable poise to claim the match ball with a tidy finish from an acute angle in added time.

Asked if he expected the forward to reach the 30-goal barrier, Wenger replied: "No, but I feel in this team you can score goals.

KAKA WANTS RONALDINHO AT MILAN

Brazilian star Kaka would relish the prospect of playing alongside international team-mate Ronaldinho at AC Milan next season.

The Rossoneri appear to be in pole position to acquire the playmaker, who is widely thought to be on the move after just 13 appearances for Barcelona this term.He would add to a growing list of Brazilians already with the Serie A giants.

And Kaka believes the influence of compatriots Dida, Cafu, Serginho, Digao, Alexandre Pato and Ronaldo would help Ronaldinho settle in no time at all.

He told the Lancel newspaper: "He has not forgotten how to play football. He is not having a good time at Barcelona for different reasons that are not easy to talk about, as we are not with him every day.

"If he comes here to Milan, it will be a great signing for the club. He will be welcomed. The Brazilians here will help him a lot."

RONALDO SCOOPS PFA AWARD

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named PFA Player of the Year for the second year in succession.

The Manchester United midfielder has enjoyed another outstanding campaign having scored 38 goals in all competitions for the Premier League champions.

The 23-year-old beat off competition from Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Cesc Fabregas, Emmanuel Adebayor and David James to land the prize.

Arsenal midfielder Fabregas was named Young Player of the Year - an award which Ronaldo also won in 2007 - at a star-studded ceremony at London's Grosvenor House Hotel on Sunday night.

Ronaldo did not attend the event in person but was shown on screen accepting his trophy from United manager Sir Alex Ferguson at the club's Carrington training ground.United are currently preparing for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Barcelona on Tuesday night.

Ronaldo said: "I feel very happy. When you work all season to play good, to do something for the team, to do your contribution for the team and then at the end of the season the PFA give you this award, it is a great moment, it is an honour, a pleasure.

"It is a great motivation to carry on like that, to work more and get better. "I feel very good but it is not just my award, my team-mates have helped me a lot this season. "They give me good passes to score goals - and I score - but it is a good moment for me.''

Ronaldo, who joined United in a £12.24million move from Sporting Lisbon in 2003, feels he has improved considerably during his time at Old Trafford.

UNITED ARE FEELING THE HEAT - BALLACK

Chelsea's two-goal hero Michael Ballack insists Manchester United are feeling the pressure as they prepare for a dramatic end to the Barclays Premier League campaign.

Ballack's two goals, the second from the penalty spot, helped Avram Grant's side to overcome leaders Manchester United and draw level with them on points at the top of the table.

The last few weeks have seen United's five-point lead eroded and Ballack is well qualified to understand how much pressure Sir Alex Ferguson's men are now under.

WENGER`S NOT TIRED OF CLICHY

Gael Clichy has what it takes to be the best left-back in the Barclays Premier League, according to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman may still only be 22, but he has been one of the most consistent performers for the Gunners in what has been a rollercoaster campaign.

Clichy has made more than 45 appearances for Arsenal this season, putting to rest any concerns over his long-term fitness following three operations on a persistent foot injury. The pacy Arsenal left-back - who picked up a Premier League winners medal in 2003-04 - has proved more than an able successor to Ashley Cole, who left for Chelsea in August 2006.

Despite his brilliant club form, Wenger accepts Clichy, signed from AS Cannes in 2003, has a lot of competition to see him break into the French national team - especially from compatriot Patrice Evra at Manchester United.

However, the Arsenal manager, who takes his men to relegated Derby on Monday night, feels time is on the full-back's side for the international recognition he deserves.

"I am very positive with Gael because he loves the game and, every day after training, he's out there practising to improve," Wenger said. "There was a question mark about whether Gael would last the season - but he has played more games than anyone else. "He had three operations on his metatarsal and he had already undergone hernia surgery, and we were concerned over whether he would be capable to absorb so many games with such a slight frame.

"The big victory for me this year is not that he has played well - I expected him to play well - but that he could absorb a complete season at the top level without any rest."

Wenger feels the best is yet to come from Clichy. "There is still more in there," declared the Arsenal manager.
"When you see the game he produced at Old Trafford, you think 'oh, there's more in the locker, because he takes more responsibility'. "It was a top-class performance, not only football wise but character - he showed a non acceptance of the defeat when we were down 2-1. He was the one who really moved forward."

The Arsenal manager believes it is only a matter of time before his fellow countryman earns a full France cap, possibly just in time for this summer's European Championships.

"I would like him to play," said Wenger, "but there is Eric Abidal who plays at Barcelona, Evra who is at Manchester United, Clichy at Arsenal - that shows you how rich France is.

"It is the same on the right side, there is [William] Sagnol at Bayern Munich and Francois Clerc, at Lyon, then they have [Bacary] Sagna who is here at Arsenal.

"You can go into every position, it is like that with the French team."
Wenger insisted: "I believe Clichy is very, very close to the national team. I think he should be in the team, for me.
"He should be competing with Evra and Abidal, but France have so many players it's hard to make the selection.
"He is the youngest one, he will be 23 years old this year - and don't forget he was injured for a while. But he has hit many people with his performance at Old Trafford."

Wenger is, meanwhile, without several first-team regulars for the trip to Pride Park.

Winger Alex Hleb will miss the rest of the season through suspension following a charge of violent conduct from the Football Association, while Abou Diaby, who would have been available after a ban is now out after suffering a thigh injury on duty with the reserves.

Wenger confirmed Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) and Sagna (ankle) will also take no further part in the final three matches.

"Diaby's season is finished, Hleb's season finished, Rosicky's season finished, and Eduardo of course. Now Sagna's season is over as well," said the Arsenal manager.
