Title: Dwarf Fortress
Post by: Commisar Gaunt on November 11, 2007, 11:55:00 pm
First off, I must say that the learning curve is ENORMOUS. It's more like a learning wall.

Secondly, I must say that once you get over that learning curve, you won't be able to stop.

<a href="http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Main_Page" target="_blank">http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Main_Page (http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Main_Page)</a>

This is the wikipedia, which you will need.

<a href="http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/" target="_blank">http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/)</a>

This is where you go to download it.

And now, about the game!

Do you like dwarves? Do you like strip mining planet earth?  Do you having an army and having them decimated by bloodthirsty fire imps, goblins, various demons, and elephants? Have you ever tortured your sims in various Sim games? Have you ever thought to yourself, "I wonder what it would be like if they actually lost it?" Do you like watching them actually lose it? Would you like to watch the ensuing chaos as they tear their breathern apart in their anger, destroying precious statues, and killing every animal they see? I've seen a dwarf knock another unconcious in his rage WHILE ON FIRE, slowly breaking his bones when he was laying prone on the ground. Then he threw himself into my magma pool, and burned up into a nice crispy bit. The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure he went crazy because I had killed one of his cats, which he had about... twenty of. Quite attached he was.

Madness???

THIS... IS... DWARF FORTRESS!

You make a fortress and command it in every day life, just trying to survive. You grow food, brew drinks, make various supplies such as armor and weapons, hollow out a mountain in multiple levels (you can dig straight down), catch and butcher animals, or tame them and make them your pets, and generally do everything and anything you've ever dreamed of.

Don't be discouraged by the ASCII graphics--I didnt like them, but suddenly they just... clicked for me, and now it's simply amazing.

Don't be discouraged by the huge learning curve.  As they say, losing is fun! You can visit your old fortresses in adventure mode, or you can set out to reclaim it again anew, just in case you made some bad decisions and all of your dwarves died of thirst during the winter when all of the water froze and you didn't have enough brew to go around. Whoops.

Just a word of warning. Don't look into the eyes of the elephants!

I HAVE SEEN WHAT LURKS IN THE LOWEST LAYERS OF THE EARTH! I HAVE SEEN THEM TEAR HEARTY DWARVES IN HALF IN ONE STROKE, NEVER RESTING TILL THEY ARE CAST BACK INTO THE ABYSS!

I HAVE SEEN THE GLOWING MADNESS IN THE PACHYDERMS EYES, AS THEY SLOWLY CRUSH THE LIFE OUT OF THEIR VICTIMS, AND PLAY WITH THEIR UNCONSCIOUS VICTIMS LIKE RAG DOLLS! YOU DON'T KNOW FEAR--THEY ARE THE THINGS FEAR IS BORN OF!

Just don't start playing before anything major, like tests or projects. I seriously regret finding this game days before I have a philosophy paper due.

How about Tropico?
Title: Dwarf Fortress
Post by: Commisar Gaunt on November 12, 2007, 11:29:52 am
Tropico aint got nuthin on this mutha.

First off, this game is free, and there are updates just about every other week. Second off, lets see the inhabitants of tropico slowly go mad and destroy the very things they love in a fit of rage. Thirdly, I don't see any tentacle demons, goblins, batmen, antmen, or elephants tearing the island dwellers to shreds. Fourthly... this is the most awesome thing ever.

In a way, Tropico is sort of like this, without all of the lava, pit traps, undermining, ballista shooting, and the occasional iron giant which tears your mountain in twain searching for your dwarves.

You've obviously never tried to maintain an oppressive military dictatorship

Tropico is the best city builder type game ever.

Have you tried this yet?

I had a dwarf that went crazy when he didn't get what he wanted, so he slowly started torturing all of the cats in my fortress (im assuming those are the creatures he kept on running into, since I had like... 50 cats at that time) till I organized a posse of axedwarves to take him down.

Post by: Joker on November 12, 2007, 11:42:04 am
Oh.

This is gonna be a toughie, but Tropico is going to be hard to beat, because silliness aside the whole faction model for the internal politics of the island is probably the best feature of any builder game I've ever played.

I agree, I would probably like tropico.

If you like tropico then, be careful with Dwarf Fortress, i.e. play it when you don't have anything important to do within the next 4 hours.

You can swap your saved games and play it like a multiplayer game, like taking turns in years. Name a dwarf after you and pass it on and document what sort of madness happens.  Who knows, the dwarf you named after yourself could be the next serial killer, or simply a master engraver.

I know how to irrigate, gather the seeds for terranean crops, build the plots and so on, but I cant get anything to grow on them. perhaps I need to pick a more active person to be grower. there's always someone who won't do their job, and you need every single one of them to do work in the beginning. w/out functioning minerS, lumberjack, carpenter, mason, mechanic, grower, brewer, architect, not to mention hunter/fisher/butcher you are basically fuct.

Post by: Commisar Gaunt on November 22, 2007, 10:23:28 am
you have to select the crop with q and pick which type of plant you want

I have tons of plants now--a hint, gather plants, and then build some outside plots to grow them. I grow prickleberries year round.

Oh, and my last fortress died of thirst b/c I had a massive immigrant influx and only one still... it was a massacre X_X

The fortress I'm on now has over 100 people in it, including a working fortress guard and militia, which I rotate people out of so they all don't suck at life if anything comes out to kill them... No goblin sieges yet for me, just a ton of goblin and kobold thieves stealing stuff. One goblin made off with a baby, and the mother freaked out in the fortress guard barracks. She didn't last very long.

Title: Dwarf Fortress
Post by: Commisar Gaunt on November 22, 2007, 11:35:49 pm
hmm...

did you assign him the job? like, did you manually make sure that "farming" was lit up in his job list?

when it's working and your farmer is going his job, a square on your tilled field turns from squiggly to straight every time he plants, which pretty much means there is a plant planted there

overcame the learning wall!  my god, pumps, windmills, levers, caveins, traps!  this is freaking amazing!  it took like 20 hours to get through the learning wall, now I'm into the fun part...

my best fortress lasted 9 years... a colossus and titan were rampaging thru it, then I managed to lock them in a room and spent a year building a trap tunnel for them, but as soon as I opened the tunnel they caught sight of my dwarves, became enraged and busted out the locked door... finally had to abandon with just one crippled soldier in bed dying of thirst, and a baby dwarf crawling around the basement among the bodies, it was so sad.  her profile said: "she has witnessed death recently she has lost a mother to tragedy, she has lost a father to tragedy, she needs alcohol to get through the day, she is starving"

I built a fortress near a volcano.

I started to harvest the volcano's magma goodness, and had no trouble until a magma man and TWO fire imps decided that it would be fun to set fire to everything.

They started with a sneak attack, killing my best magma forge operator. Fine. I just stationed my military force there, so they wouldn't come back.

Months went by with no further attack. By then, my fortress had grown quite a bit, and I didn't want to waste any of my militia's time with a pointless task. Minutes after the squad leaves, the magma man and imps are back, killing two engravers (I was detailing the stone EVERYWHERE in my fortress), all three of my furnace/forge workers. And a baby. A BABY.

Needless to say, a vicious struggle ensued, burritos the magma man in pieces, the imps riddles with arrows, two dogs burnt to a crisp, and a newly blind marksman, whom was crippled for life, lying in his bed to this day. I keep getting messages every other minute or so saying "Farming Job Cancelled: (whatever the hell his name is) has passed out from pain."

I figured out how to transfer save files, if anyone still wants to do the succesion game thing:

1. If you're still playing DF, save and quit.

2. Go to this folder. If you changed the name or have a different version, the first part should be whatever you changed it to or downloaded.

df_27_169_33f\data\save\

3. Find the appropriate region folder. If, when selecting a world to load, it says "region7" in the info area for that save, the region folder you need is region7.

4. Upload that region folder to your favorite file-hosting site.

5. Give the next player the link to the file.

6. The new owner of the save file then downloads it to df_27_169_33f\data\save\ (or whatever), and continues the game.

I tested these steps (except for the last three) between two different versions, the newer version having no save files whatsoever, and it worked. I assume that the last three steps will work without testing.

According to the download page (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/), any game from sub-version A to sub-version F (the current one, released yesterday;) is compatible with any other version within that range; however, I suggest that if we decide to use the same version, F would be a good choice; according to the Changelog (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev_now.html), Toady finally fixed the damn "hey, let's channel out each other's floor" bug.

Urge to kill rising.

84 Megabytes? Are you fucking kidding me? I looked at my own region folder and it's only six or seven. I apologize for being rude, but how much extra crap did you put in there that you could easily have posted in this topic? That'll take like a week to download on my 17th-century internet. If it's not too much trouble, could you make another file with VITAL CRAP ONLY?

Also, I suggest to prevent further zombie attacks, we should start signing up in an organized manner. Add yourselves to the following list as needed. If nobody else signs up by the time Llama hosts a file with VITAL CRAP ONLY, I'll take #2. We'll start "looping" the list when we get to the end.

1. llamavore
2. Untelligent(???)
3. PROFIT. Or whatever.
4. etc.
5. etc.
6. etc.
7. ETC DAMMIT
8. 9. 10. 11. Fucking 300 maybe. I dunno.

Urge to kill falling... Falling... Falling... RISING... Falling... Gone.

Sorry about that, unnecessarily large files tend to piss me off occaisionally.

Nvm, I remembered the little Google button in the top right corner of my browser. For some reason, half the time I check WinRAR, it says I need to pay them $40 before I can use it, half of the time it says it's Freeware, and half of the time they tell me it's Shareware, but they never bother me after the trial limit except with the "liek give us muneys lolol" window every time I try to use it, but they let me use it anyway. Strange.

Update 1
Granite 1 - Granite 24

So it seems I've been hired to watch over this outpost, "Giltbearded." Apparently, they need my vast experience, amazing expertise, and overwhelming modesty.

Dear god. Workshops nowhere near the stockpiles (except for one, albeit the only workshop that made shit for it was the farthest one away), a giant eagle ominously flapping around some discarded equipment, and to top it all off, there seems to be a shortage of dwarves around, so I have to cut back on my usual job quota. Well, the greatest civilizations of all time had to start somewhere, I suppose...

Dwarves are now primed and ready to go. Two miners, a mason/mechanic, a carpenter/crossbow maker, and an all-purpose food/animal... dude. Nowhere near what I prefer, but it'll do until some random yokels come visit this godforsaken place.

Alright, first order of business: workshop efficiency. Workshops next to both the supply and the product stockpiles. Much better.

Stairs that just lead straight aboveground with no protection whatsoever. Possibly the reason there's only five dwarves around. Time to fix that.

Much better. Not completely finished yet, but you get the idea.

I also took out some doors that had no functional purpose, created a meeting hall so the animals wouldn't wander near the giant eagle, started to dig out a dining room so my dwarves could eat in style, and began a channel to bring water from the brook closer to the fort. The beer's going to run out eventually. I feel like those pillars by the food-making area are a tad unnecessary, but there's too many of them and I only have one mason to take them down with. The pillars are staying.

Thank the gods, the Elves have arrived. I hope those pointy-eared freaks brought food.

Haha, look at all this Giant Cave Spider silk shit that was just lying on the ground. I didn't know these guys were loaded.

alternate dimension time-travelling intelligence report!!!

i've played my version through another year. dwarven caravan still comes, but no new liaison.

which means you/we/giltbeards might have to hold out a while for an anvil.

btw the 2 guys before (and the liaison) died outside of the fortress -.-

i dont usually stockpile the mechanisms/crafts/woodgoods/stonegoods/etc, i just build what i need til it gets slightly cluttered (CLT) and then place the goods.

also: brook freezes in winter.

your main threat will be cougars, one or two. wolves come but if you're using the axedwarf (slash ambusher slash woodcutter) they shouldn't be a problem.

kobolds came in by the stairs when the caravans came in. theyll probably come in the same way caravans do, regardless.

also, immigrants arriving in hordes of 20-30. you might consider building an immigrant disposal trap. the bridges at the main gate would work if you set up some pressure plates to trigger them and closed off every other way when the immigrants come.

the supports may seem unnecessary but they dont block your movement and they're spaced to allow lots of 3x3 shops as well as walking space.

Post by: Untelligent on December 22, 2007, 02:47:00 pm
A cave-in will only happen if a section of floor is not attached to a floor, wall, or pillar below it or next to it. Example:

o = floor
x = channel

ooooooooo
ooxxxxxoo
ooxoooxoo
ooxoooxoo
ooxoooxoo
ooxxxxxoo
ooooooooo

This floor will cavein to the empty room below because of the unattached section in the middle. On the other hand, if just one of the side-x's was not channeled out, the floor would not collapse.

...or so the Wiki says. I don't now how recent that section is.

Update 2
Granite 24 - Felsite 11

A thief has stolen a (Giant Cave Spider Silk sock)? SMITE THE BASTARD.

Hmm... Sadly, he was never foun- DAMMIT HE DID IT AGAIN.

Alright, bring all the spare clothes in. That way, he won't be able to hide so easily.

Just what we need, more cats.

Dining room hollowed out. Yay.

THERE'S PLATINUM IN THEM THAR HILLS
(http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff76/untelligent/dwarf_gilt_2/plat_1.png)

At last, migrants. Perhaps things will get done a little faster now.

...Holy shit, twenty migrants and still counting.

Wait, nevermind, it stopped at twent- no, some more are coming.

Finally, we can start DOING things around here!

Update 3
Felsite 11 - Limestone 1

As the new immigrants will need somewhere to sleep, I have began to dig out some new bedrooms directly beneath the old ones.

As you can see, this design (which I have often used in previous outpost management jobs), while lacking in personal space, yields the maximum (or close to it) amount of bedrooms usable within a small area, conserving as much space as possible. Each room contains enough room for a door, a bed, and perhaps a chest or cabinet to store personal belongings in.

Oh, fuck, where did all those monkeys come from?

Fucking monkeys.

That's strange, my woodcutter seems to have lost his axe. The fucking monkeys must have stole it.

Made use of some of the new guys... added some more workshops... Oh, and some private rooms for the new Record Keeper and Sheriff.

Well, I finally ran out of logs. I pray to Armok that the Caravan brings an anvil or an axe. Or at least more logs.

Speaking of the Caravan, I built a pair of Craft workshops near the depot. The Fucking Monkeys stole the last of the Giant Cave Spider Silk shit, so I'll need a new source of tradeable items.

A goblin snatcher attacked the fort. I drafted everyone. Needless to say, he was annihilated. Unfortunately, while he was being beaten to a pulp, his accomplice kidnapped a child. DAMN YOU.

Some rooms I plan to use as tombs.

Made a small jail so the Sheriff feels useful.

A dwarf has taken a camel bone, barged into a craft workshop, booted out the craftsdwarf, and refuses to let anyone else in the workshop. He just sits there, screwing around with the bone and muttering to himself. I hope he fucking makes something useful.

A fucking scepter? What the hell am I supposed to do with that? And he named it. Cute.

He's also a "legendary" bone carver now. Perhaps if I ever find some more bones, he could be a bit more useful.

I finally found where I left that fucking axe.

More migrants? Time to hollow out some more bedrooms...

I just realized I had mined the first section of bedrooms incorrectly earlier. The undug section on the left is slightly more space-efficient; the previous plan required more hallways than I usually use.

Oh shit, the Fucking Monkeys are back. Fortunately, the previous ruler's traps killed off about half of them. Note to self: make entrance narrower to allow more trap-killing.

Once again, the enemy has been overcome by sheer numbers.

And Autumn is here. Armok alone knows what the second half of the year will bring. If it brings monkeys, I will be severely irritated.

i didnt know you played DF mr. gaunt

untelligent, you cant use cages for justice unless they are metal... otherwise they only use them for animals.

those stone-fall traps that killed the monkeys... all they take are a few mechanisms. but be aware that kobolds can pick even locked doors and avoid traps, and i think the goblins can open doors too. so you should wall off those stairs to the surface, or put more traps and station guards, if you like.

also to avoid future headaches you might want to cage up all the animals... some of the dwarves will adopt a horse, a mule, a cat, etc. each.... and fuck up whatever construction project they work on bc 'SOMETHING IS IN TEH WAYS!'
Title: Dwarf Fortress
Post by: Untelligent on December 26, 2007, 05:58:38 pm
Yeah, I figured out I couldn't use the cages after a while, so it's just ropes now; they aren't very good for jails, but I don't really have anyone in jail at the moment, so I'll deal with that when I need to.

Almost done with the next log, I might finish it tonight.

Update 4
Limestone 1 - Moonstone 1

After a long period of time in which nothing interesting happened, the caravan has arrived.

Nothing overly important, just lots of food.

Later: Mid-Autumn already, still nothing interesting...

Shit. Well, I didn't really like that bit of floor there anywa- OH GOD MY HAND
(http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff76/untelligent/dwarf_gilt_4/cavein_2.png)

My legs are broken. HELP!

Oh, goodie, a fucking KID's coming to my rescue.

As you can see from this bucket, someone was kind enough to bring me water, but the son of a bitch decided to go take a nap when he was ten feet away from the entrance to the fortress.

He tried again, but this time he got hungry halfway to the river. If I hadn't fallen in the middle of the channel I myself helped dig, we could open the floodgate and just let the river flow that last two feet to the fortress.

Still thirsty. If I die, my ghost will haunt you worthless bastards for eternity.

Seems like someone dragged me to a spare bed while I was unconscious. Also seems like someone brought me water while I was unconscious. I might see this through yet.

Oh, and the drawbridge. The last ruler had two here, but I couldn't get them to work, so I made a new one. THIS is what I was working on when I accidentally cut out the section of ground I was standing on.

Well, it's been over a month since the accident, and I show no sign of recovery. In fact, my condition seems to be steadily worsening; it's been impossible to sleep lately, as I keep getting knocked out by the pain. Soon, I will be unable to even bark out orders from the bed in the jails that I was put in.

A possessed dwarf has taken over a Carpenter's workshop. Make a prosthetic hand or I'll crawl over to you and eat your feet off.

Winter has arrived. The brook will freeze soon, but the project I had started many months ago is almost to completion...

Update 5
Moonstone 1 - Granite 1

At last, one of my legs has mended! I may see the spring again after all...

An animal trap? Not very useful, considering we've never used an animal trap the entire time we've been here.

Kobold thief? Yawn. Smite him.

The river project is finally complete! Well... Sort of. It will still take a month or two for the water level to be high enough to drink from, but we should be able to build a well long before then.

The brook froze. I planned to build a dam to fill the fort pool faster, but the brook thawed again before I could get around to doing anything. Shit. Maybe those crazy elves are on to something with that "global warming" theory they blame on dwarves' magma usage...

Well, this was a fairly uninteresting winter. I now pass the baton of leadership onto my successor. Long live Armok!

(Will post link to file and some general tips for the next guy later tonight. Probably.)

QUINTUPLE POST!

The File... is in the next post.

Notes to the next guy:

1. There's a sizeable number of dwarves running around, and I used a fairly complex job-assignment system, so it might be a bit confusing at first, especially if you're fairly new to DF. Most of it is self-explanitory, but the dwarves I labled "workers" are carpenters/mechanics/masons. Remember that if you get confused.

2. I strongly suggest using Dwarf Foreman (http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Utilities#Dwarf_Foreman). It's a useful tool that lets you mass-assign tasks based on their profession, including the rediculous amount of custom professions I gave them. Might save a few headaches, especially if you want to change the job assignments I gave them. To get it to work with version 33f, after you download it, open the "config" file that came with it and replace what's in there with the code below.

Code: [Select]
check=00893c7b
critter_start=01420A38
dwarfidpos=01241AD0
profession_start=45c

3. There's two levers lying around. If you're too afraid to find out what they do yourself, the one near the pool (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff76/untelligent/dwarf_gilt_5/leverpool.png) stops water from coming to the pool; push it once it starts overflowing (at the rate I saw it fill up, it probably won't happen for a LONG time, but it will eventually). The one near the (currently raised) bridge (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff76/untelligent/dwarf_gilt_5/leverbridge.png) lowers and raises the bridge. Do whatever the hell you want with that, I don't care.

I'm deep into figuring out how to make a waterfall that provides misting at every level, all the way to the basement and then pumped back up to the surface to prevent overflow.  as soon as I got hydraulics down I'll load up the region.  does anybody know if water falling thru a grate produces mist?

-.- why do you want/need mist

you could try cutting the fall up with ledges like soo:

anyways. BE FOREWARNED: you know where i dug that really deep pit under the bridge? down a few levels and a little bit due south is an isolated magma chamber. magma man kicked my ass.

I think mist gives the happy thought, and a falling column doesnt make any mist.  i tried the ledge approach but it makes water puddle out around the area.  not dangerous I think but it's muddy.  I'm pretty sure an up/down stairway is the best way, as I recall from my early disasters it makes mist but doesnt cause any puddles (except at the bottom).  Gaunt feel free to go before me I am gonna be occupied another couple days with some projects I wanna perfect before I start my term in office.

which brings up a question.  using "fluid logic" I want a floodgate/drainage system that will release exactly 7n units of water into a chamber at the pull of a lever, then reset and refill so that next time I pull the lever the same thing happens again.  this is for farm irrigation.  also, a drowning chamber that triggers when an enemy/animal steps on it, fills with water for a few minutes, then flushes the corpse to a grate by the butcher which I will open at my convenience.  or if it's non-drownable, I'll use it for bow practice.  of course the chamber should reset automatically.  I was thinking of building my trade depot inside one of these.  don't know if elves can drown?  maybe some spikes at the end would seal the deal.  ooo can I make a bloody waterfall?
Title: Dwarf Fortress
Post by: Fake from State Jarm on January 04, 2008, 11:37:37 am
as far as i can tell, spikes dont do -any- damage except when hooked up to spring out of the ground. even if you fall on them there is apparently no damage in addition to falling damage. so to use them you'd want to rig them so they jump out of the ground due to whatever trigger. but also, they kill friendlies too. (good for killing immigrants!)

i'm not experienced with floodgates and drains. i've created flood rooms for irrigation before; using an 8 tile chamber filled 7/7 with water to irrigate a 49 tile farm chamber. even then the water didn't make it all the way across the room.
