I for one, bid welcome to our new robotic overloads.
HOLY SHIT (http://gizmodo.com/368651/new-video-of-bigdog-quadruped-robot-is-so-stunning-its-spooky)
Yea, at the end.... DARPA
That means that heres the current timeline:
1 year: Finish Development
2 years: Deploy oversea
3 years: Upgrade
5 years: Self Aware
7 years: Skynet launched
9 years: THis video is "leaked" to robots worldwide
9 years 2 days: Skynet nukes us
15 years: John conner FAILS to travel back in time (I mean seriously, they were humanoid in the movies, he's totally FUCKED by these)
30 years: Total enslavement of Human race.
-
NEVER!!!
VIVIA LA RESISTANCE!!!!!
-
first, self-aware AI is not advanced enough yet to pose a threat as a rival civilization.
second, the power to fire weapons autonomously will probably never be given to machines...
..any time soon...
cool vid though. i wonder if it can run on something besides gas, in the field.
-
If I saw that thing running at me in battle, I'd die from laughing my ass off. Especially if it went into slow-mo like at the end. xD
-
That's bizarre.
-
All I thought about was that robot chicken...robot....who humps cars and washing machines running up and humping this one.
-
Congratulations. It's a ten million dollar billy-goat.

Someone hasn't been to IRaq. And that someone ISN'T me.
-
He means without input from a controller, I think, the SWORDS require input from the pilot.
-
Congratulations. It's a ten million dollar billy-goat.
That carries 340 pounds of equipment in almost any terrain so actual humans don't have to. It's really not that dumb of an idea, especially when compared to more traditional alternatives...like donkeys.

Just because it's classified doesn't mean it isn't there.
-
340 pounds, my DOD guy said that will be the following:
50 lbs armor
100 lbs of batteries
sweeper shotgun
laser designator
optional M240 add-on(or other AR)
2mm cannons
15 lbs high explosive for self destruct in event of capture

Or say, airdrops, which pretty much ignore terrain?

It'd be really awesome if an air drop could drop 340 pounds of equipment into the third floor of a building under RPG attack.
-
Airdrops are much less effective.
You compromise your targets postion, trees can interfere, you need to fly a plane which could be spooted/shot down, lots of things that could be negated by a robot that moved all the stuff for us. All they need is to put some sound supression armor around the engine and they are good to go.

Hmm I think your DoD guy is doing it wrong
We NEVER self-destruct equipment like that.
I mean, 15 lbs of HE could take out probably close to half a block.
Additionally, The armor they would put onto it would either be plates or SSA (Sound supression Armor) which would make the annoying buzz a minimal so that hostiles don't hear it coming. Also, I don't think that 50lbs would be enough armor to do anything. I mean, my FLAK vest plates were 35lbs total, and that only covered about a 2 foot area. They obviously have a LOT of work before it can be armored.
Batteries I'm not sure of
I DOUBT they would put a sweeper shotgun on it because there would be NO REASON for one that powerful when a simple SPAS-12 at the MOST would work
Laser Designators can't be operated by robots because you need to communicate via radio with your command group. The designator only gives you the grid and guides the bomb. It doesn't give you the payload, situtation, ETC
2mm cannons= USELESS (A 9mm pistol is standard issue, and a BB is 4.5mm). A 2mm cannon wouldn't cost to much to maintain because seperate ammo would need to be shipped JUST for it.
And, we NEVER incorporate a self-destruct like that. The largest self-destruct mechanism we use is 1/5thlbs of C4 and that is on the predator UAV.
-
Well, I wonder why he gave me wrong infoz. Oh yeah, he's DoD.
-
They should incorporate a speaker that constantly pumps out "We Will Rock You" at max volume when on the battlefield.
;_; I weep at the thought of such awesome in one robot.
-
I think this is the most awesome thing I've ever seen. Specially when it started to slip on the icy ground.

Currently, International Law Requires those of us going out into sector to blair the "AMERICA.... FUCK YEAH" song over our vehicle-speakers at least 5 times.
-
damn, that video is amazing. i wonder what they'll do next...

I've got my fingers crossed for sex-bots.

Would be very funny. just imagine, a vehicle in Iraq blairing "AMERICA..... FUCK YEAH"
-
I don't need to imagine. I've DONE IT.

I think the Japanese are working on perfecting that meow.

Just because it's classified doesn't mean it isn't there.
extremely advanced programming is needed to give a weapons system the ability to discriminate between friend or foe as well as a human warfighter discriminates. if such programming is not achieved and used, then robotic warfighters would threaten the political stability of the cause they fought for, what with the possibility for abuse of the power they represent in the field and warcrimes they may be inept to avoid.
it doesn't seem likely that the military would secretly bypass the development of such artificial consciences either, because of the potential political fallout from hiding something like that from the public.
so they have to make machines smart enough to kmeow right from wrong, and that will probably take a good deal of time.

I really can't go into how they work, but we do use them. Mainly, as HMMWVs.
-
So, right up until I watched the video, I was like, "Hah! This is stupid...robots? Surely they jest!"
And then I watched the mechanical beastie right itself after being kicked.
And now I'm scared...
-
That's bizarre.
lol holiday hawk

I was amazed when the guy kicked it, but when it recovered from the ice, I said "...fuck" in my mind.
-
I said "fuck" in my mouth.
-
I was singing when I watched it, so I couldn't really say fuck out loud.

have you made a habit of singing to robots?
how long has this been going on
