Whenever I try to run a game, a message tonics up saying, "(Insert game here) has encountered an unspecified error and will now close." That's it. As a note, a rather old game (Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven, I'd say from around '96) will still run perfectly well. At the same time, my computer also started to change the resolution by itself, loading at the lowest resolution setting and thus making all icons enormous. I know it's practically nothing to go on, sorry. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Windows '98?

No, XP. Not Vista.
A note: a slightly older game (Rome: Total War) will begin to start up, but then says it can't find Direct X9. Direct X was installed when I installed Medieval II: Total War today, when I reinstalled Rome: Total War, and when I reinstalled Direct X9 by itself, to no effect. This error is more specific than the one I mentioned before, which I get from the newer games (Medieval II and Warhammer: Dawn of War).

Maybe a virus, You might even need to reformat.
