Title: Dear RIA: I HATE A.R.
Post by: Crunka on November 03, 2008, 08:26:40 pm
those of you who have to suffer because of this understand what i'm talking about.

since my town is full of illiterates (including my retarded teachers), they started using this software (by Renaissance) to try to force you to read.

apparently you take the Stroking Test (a general reading quiz), then they give you a score, that is your "reading range level." it ranges from 1-12. i took the quiz and got a range of 5.0-13.0. that means i can read books that have a score within that range. they score the books depending on pages and whatnot (Macbeth=4.0|Nancy Drew=5.0). because i'm fucking stupid i did well on the quiz and now have to read 25 pts worth of books in 6 weeks.

IT IS TOTAL ox.

Don't get me wrong, I love reading, it's just that they're forcing me to read. They make reading a chore and a task rather than a form of entertainment. I hate it.

does AR sound like a fucking steaming pile of turd to anyone else?

Did you learn your lesson: Sometimes you just have to beat the stroking test

lol. it's not actually called the "Stroking Test." It's just that it's a whole lot of egotistical masturbation of "OMG I'M A BEHTA READER" and meaningless classification of students.

You should have just answered everything "loldongs." Your reading assignment would have been to read the internet.

What are you, in 5th grade or something!?

I had to get about that many points when I was in 4th grade(level was 5th-10th and couldn't read outside that level) and have forever hated reading since then. Seriously, all I could do was read. If I didn't, I would have failed elementary school even though I had one of the best reading levels. I read the 4th Harry Potter book before 3rd grade! When I got to my school in 3rd grade, one of the teachers was telling the kids they should read the series, and when I told her I'd already read the ones that had come out, she barely believed me. Stupid AR f'ing AR AR AR shit fuck shit.

Rant over.

No, actually it's not, but I don't feel like typing anymore.

i'm reading a 41 point book atm and i'm half-way done.

unless you were reading college level when you were in 5th grade i don't see the problem with my score.

(the chart goes up to 12, i have 13)

Wow. That's some major oxshit. Teachers always complain about how students never enjoy reading, yet they've got their heads shoved too far up their collective asses to realize that they're contributing to the problem. They make reading a dull, boring task when making students read in school, and as a result students associate "reading" with "boring". If they actually started engaging the students and did interesting activities with them instead of making them write yet another cookie cutter paper, you'd find less students who loathed reading. It obviously won't get rid of the problem completely, but it would certainly thin out the number of kids who are bored by reading.

WTF is this "p[oint" system?

Back in my day, if you were an idiot, you just weren't allowed to move up.  I had a friend who was held back like, 5 times...

Yeah, it's always "a friend," isn't it?

yea it was sort of a friend.  He was my friend when we were both in 6th grade.  He was held back, and I lost touch.  I recently ran into him in college, and he had JUST graduated high school.

It depends how old you are. I was doing the same level in 4th grade, so I guess it's close, but in my defense, I was one smart-ass motherfuckin' kid, and compared to the rest of my school now, still am pretty high up there.
