Title: Moved out
Post by: Vixen of Gefaehrlich on July 11, 2009, 11:27:04 pm
Yay! I have moved out of the house. Been away 2 weeks now. Moved up to northern Texas near Forthworth and Dallas to go to Lincoln Institute of Technology to go into the welding program here. Being away from parents is amazing, haha. As well as being free to hang out with all the welding guys, im the only girl in the welding currently.

Had fun doing stick welding in AG class, and seemed far better than choice than going to school 4 more years. Lol. Go for 10 months to learn all the welding, get out with a starting pay of $15-20/hr. Its hot work, but there is such a shortage of welders and you always need them, can go anywhere I want and have a job (pretty much). Pays well, so met my goal faster of having lots of money lol.  Don't mind hanging with the guys and doing hard work so it shouldnt be that bad.
Lol. The instructors learned me fast, they say women welders are really good, better at detail and work.

Sorry llamavore, I don't think my instructors will let me wear a swimsuit into the shop.  I still have 2-3 more weeks of class work anyways. Gotta sit through all the safey and rules till our boots and tools are shiped in.

but there is such a shortage of welders

That's fairly surprising, actually, given the economy--we've got some 10% unemployed in quite a few states.

I'm sticking around in grad school for as long as I can simply because there aren't any jobs out there for me.

Sounds like you made a slick career move finding one of the few jobs still in demand.  My buddy just graduated from Hopkins with a Master's in applied math, and he can't get a job anywhere.  Congrats!

Yea. I was wanting go into computers and buisness.. But going through another 4 years of school and thousands of dollars later to struggle with hundreds of others just for the bare minimum jobs. Or spend 17k and 10 months later get out earning good money and easily pay off debt and have spare money work with. Bit of hot work, but at least it is work unlike everyone else struggling for the min wage or even to keep a job.

The only problem I see would be your eye sight would get pretty bad after 20 years. But meh. You should be able to become a master welder.

As far as I am aware the main health side-effect of welding is not your eyesight, but rather your lungs. A lot of shit gets in your lungs. The welding mask is pretty effective.

Weld smoke is pretty nasty shit.  But, there are plenty of specifications for building ventilation which keep you from having to breathe it all the time.

Yes. My school has a recently installed ventuallation process that starts sucking out the fumes near where you are welding (less than a foot) and takes them out so you do not have the gas get into your lungs. You still have the problem of eye and skin safety, but those are things you yourself can prevent if smart enough.
The areas you work in can still be very unsafe. High danger of vile fumes, high up places... underwater welding is daring death. The avg life span of a deep water welder is 2-4 yrs max. You can make 200$+/hr doing so, but it is dangerous work. The pressure is more likely to kill you than anything else from being so deep and then depressurizing. But hey,  if your up for playing with danger for big money sure. Im gonna stick with the easy stuff for now.

Diving be cool to learn.. But not for welding purposes. Inducing myself in constant electrical shock and other hazards not fun.

And my eyesight is already not that great, wear glasses xD Haha. But hey, if I get that kind of money to weld, laser eye surgery would be possible. For now its fine.

Girls don't exist on the Internet, therefore the topic is a lie, etc.  Someone had to say it eventually.
