Malwarebytes is probably the best on-demand scanner. If it's not finding anything you're probably good, though that doesn't rule out malware specifically targeted at the program (there was a nasty Vundo variant that would utterly destroy MBAM users). MSE is an acceptable double-checker, though I usually prefer to have one on-demand and one real-time to handle threats. I can't remember the last time I had a hit that wasn't a false positive though.

I don't see anything particularly wrong with using what you know to fill out a research paper. If he's making shit out of thin air that's one thing, but if he can use his knowledge to build a point, I don't see it being any different than looking up that knowledge to also make a point. Either way, if the point is valid it should be fine. May run afoul of some teachers for not embracing the research angle strongly, but personally all I would care about is if it was well-written and makes a good case. I write a lot, and since it's about news most of the information needs to be sourced to the site I learned it from as a matter of professional ethics. But if it's something I personally experienced or an opinion piece I don't need a source because the ideas come from my own head. Whether it's sourced or not, from my perspective so long as you're honest about your sources it shouldn't matter if the content is original or researched. My best stuff comes from when I just pick a starting point and go at it rather than being constrained to merely re-telling a story someone else has told. But that's just the perspective of a writer and not really applicable to a school situation, I guess.

The self-interviewing thing is a similar issue, but I'm a bit more wary of his tactics there. I can kinda forgive lack of research in a research paper because I think the point should be the paper, not the research, but an interview is an interview. Without making it clear he's putting words in someone's mouth based on his own observations or creating a fictional character for some purpose it does seem disingenuous. I do think that interviewing a fictional character can be interesting though, what work you save in easily being able to guide the flow of the discussion you must make up in building up a believable person that is interesting to listen to and has something to say. It's not like it's not work when done properly, just flat-out lying if he claims it wasn't made up to the teacher.

I think the thing that bothers me most is his attitude. If he can use his head to get around restrictions and put up a product of similar quality to one that doesn't avoid them, it wouldn't be so horrible, but bragging about it to the world like it's something to be proud of just feels wrong. And if he's just putting out shit work and his teachers are too dumb to see it, I'd be more inclined to call attention to it. But I've never been particularly socially aware, or cared much of anything for a social life at school, so that colors my perspective there. The computer thing pisses me off too.

AAAAA
Wheatley would be proud.

hunter2

I once told someone this was my password. Directly after they mentioned how typing in a password makes it display as stars. They believed me, thought I was that gullible, and started desperately begging mods not to ban him. I told him off straight away, but in hindsight I should have strung him along and made him believe he was in serious shit. It was hilarious.

It is entirely possible you have some better-disguised malware lurking somewhere; botnets work better when they don't impact your computer in any noticeable fashion, which would prompt you to take steps to remove them. What software do you use to do regular scans?

It has outages for me too Jenne, usually once or twice a week. I switched over to mirc now though.
I have downloaded and deleted mIRC many times.  It's a pain in the ass to get working, or maybe I'm just retarded.  I was at least able to get on yesterday, but the look of it was like something out of the early 90's.
Use Xchat WDK if you're on Windows, Xchat straight on Linux, or...well, Xchat Aqua was pretty dead on Mac last I heard so I dunno what's good on Macs. I've been using the Xchat Silverex build on Windows for years but it's long halted and not aging well, and lack of native x64 support has been a bother. Learned of the WDK build a few months ago and I haven't turned back, it's a great client.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are movies out there where 3D would work.

I never saw Avatar. Wasn't that 3D?

Maybe it worked there.
Never saw it myself, but apparently the 3D was well used in it. I don't think there was much more to the movie than the quality of the shooting though.

I like both for their own merits, but I do prefer multi-player. Multi-player is more dynamic and isn't dependent solely on AI, which means it's more different from game to game and thus holds my interest longer. As an example, Monster Hunter Tri. I loved that game, but played it primarily in multi-player. Having 3 other (usually intelligent) hunters with you against more difficult enemies was much more fun. The single-player story was decent, but not enough to override how great a team worked. There are certainly multi-player games out there that can a tell a decent story too. Not really interested in WoW-style MMO's myself, but apparently the Old Republic does an excellent job at storytelling.

Sadly, have not been able to do this since XP. :(

Open the game, load up single player to go dump some stuff in my chest, save and exit to change a setting, go to load the world again...character gone. Panic ensues.

Cool thing about it was once I found out there was a backup and put it back in, because characters are separate from worlds everything I dropped was still in my inventory. So I duplicated all that.

I'll just go out and say it. Linux is simple compared to Windows.
I wouldn't quite go that far. I would say it can be simple compared to Windows, but certainly not in every aspect.

Clearly you need to use Slackware. Or...dammit, can't remember the name now, knew someone in college who was all over it.

lmao I love Slackware

But, support for it sucks.

I think you are talking about Slax by the way
Looked around, it was Arch Linux. We had some..."fun" moments trying to get that working, heh.

Also, all the lab computers ran on openSUSE, that seemed decent.
