PlayStation 3 Question
« on: November 11, 2007, 10:37:41 pm »
Well I bought a PS3 like 3-4 months ago. When I first got it I turned on my TV plugged the old school RED YELLOW AND WHITE wires in.. put in a game plugged the system in and turned the shit on. I then heard the sound and then the games sound shortly after but no IMAGE.

I let it sit around 2 months In its box. Then my older brother came over and I talked about with him... he took it to his house and it worked perfectly fine there.

So he brought it back a few days later and we plugged it in again... same shit. SOUND NO IMAGE.

We then got a HDMI cable and the game system was at his house so I waited a while. He brought it back and we used the HDMI on another TV and played the old ass game FEAR... in the beginning we could only hear the sound and no image. Then the game came up! I played for a little bit and my brother wanted to play GTA 3 from the old PS2. We turn off the game and put in the new game... NO IMAGE.

We brought the system back in my room and played FEAR which was the only thing that seemed to be working... the next day (today) my brother came back with another game and left... I try to play it and nothing.

ONLY GAME THAT IS WORKING IS FEAR.

I'm so fucking pissed and clueless... I'm guessing its something with our TV's or maybe something with DISH but I have no clue.

Anyone know whats going on?

Quite possibly the TVs. Do any other devices work with them, like other consoles, DVD players, etc. when you plug them into the TV?
Now in NpO. Take that as you will.

Is it a 40GB?  There's a rumor (haven't verified) that the 40GB versions are having near a 40% failure rate.  Tried exchanging it?

40GB is the 2nd highest GB for PS3 right? If it is then yes thats what I have... but I know the system works because my brother took it too his house and had no problems with it.

Speaking from experience, one tiny scratch can cause a game to be 100% ruined. I have games in my collection that don't work and appear to be completely fine, and other games that work very well, and you wonder how the hell the previous owner didn't get the disk broken when they ran it over with their truck.

If that scratch is deep enough, the game could be screwed. Have you tried that game at your brother's house on your PS3 there to make sure it may not be the games by the rare chance?

Hmmm... that's weird. I've heard nothing like that happening. Though like the above poster said, could be a scratch on the discs. However, I suggest you try something that will reset the PS3's default image-output: when you first turn your PS3 on, keep your fingers over the power-on symbol for a good five seconds until it beeps again. Whatever cable(s) you're using it will recognize and let's say it recognizes HDMI-you'll then be asked if you want to use HDMI as your default, then confirm it. Afterwards, you'll be asked what resolution your screen is compatible with (480i, 720i, 720p, 180i, or 1080p) and again be asked to confirm. Of course if the screen goes black for 30 seconds, you know you selected something wrong and it will ask you again. But after you get all of that done, it asks about your sound. There my friend should be what should help.

I didn't think about this earlier, but I was just messing with my PS 1, and I noticed that the yellow cable is in the yellow whole, but instead of the white cable being in the white hole, the red cable is in there (they are plugged into the tv and there is only a white and yellow hole). Maybe if you adjust your wires and try plugging them in differently, that'll work. It did for my playstation when I first had to hook it up.

Well I only use the HDMI Cable now, i don't use the 3 colored ones.

When FEAR comes on the Video 6 that it says on the top left corner disappears and a 720p comes up then a couple seconds after the 720p is still up and FEAR comes up.

I'll try your steps but idk if that screen your talking about thats ask what you said will come up at all... because I can't see anything that has to do with the PS3, only things I see have to do with FEAR when it comes on.

Playstation 3 is not set by default to auto detect resolution abilities. FEAR may have a lower resolution than the other games you are trying to play. So the system won't show up since it's resolution is to high, but when it scales back for FEAR, it shows up on the TV. You will need to hook it up to an HDTV capable of displaying the resolution and then scale it back in the system preferences to work on your TV.

EDIT: This is true for the original PS3s, not sure if a future software update fixed this or not. But this sounds EXACTLY like your issue.

I'm going to look this up, as from what I know, only Europe's 40GB version has no backwards compatibility.

Edit: Nevermind, I'm thinking about the 60GB version. NTSCPS3-60GB has total backward compatibility, PALPS3-60GB has backward compatibility only through software-emulation.

NTSCPS3-60GB is discontinued. It's been replaced with the NTSCPS3-80GB which is software emulation only.

EDIT: Also, the newest firmware released by sony disabled emulation in the PS3

...which doesn't have much to do with what I meant to point out. Which I do have the NTSCPS3-60GB. We're trying to figure out which version he has, and it couldn't be the 80GB Version or the 20GB version.

I just found out that the firmware update wasn't scheduled till just before Christmas this year, but the hardware emulation is still in tact as of now.
