I need computer nerd help. Major nerd stuff ahead.

My motherboard is model D945GCZ. I'm currently running a Pentium D 820 and 3GB of PC2-5300 RAM. I /need/ a processor upgrade. Its not very good, plus its aging. Stuttering for any game on any setting is becoming a norm. The processor is four years old or something.

So, I need recommendations for a new processor that will fit my model motherboard (Intel D945GCZ). Does anyone have a list of processors compatible? I know Core 2 isn't, and any high end AMD's (5000+) aren't compatible. Maybe a WAY higher end Pentium D or something? Cause I need a new processor badly. Problem is I don't know what will fit or not.

Anyway Vista isn't compatible with shit, and most games don't utilize 100% of each core yet save Crysis and a few others that claim to. A quad core? That'd be a useless waste. If I had the money to blow and some sick liquid cooling then yeah, I would.

I only have a 300w powersupply by the way. >_>; So I would need to upgrade that to get the Core 2, and if I buy a new one I better buy one with extra juice for a new card maybe so now we're talking $200 plus the Core 2.

you don't need liquid cooling for a core 2 quad. i've got a core 2 duo e6600 and it runs nearly silent on the stock hsf. core 2s generate way less heat than pentium ds.

quad cores work different than dual cores, insted of the program being writen to run on 4 processors it can be made for 2 and the processor splits it for the 4

Sounds like some complicated coding. I can see how it would work for programs, but that sounds seriously complicated for games. I don't know if any even take advantage of quad's yet, either by splitting it or not.

Pentium D run hotter because they weren't build right. Basically you have to Pentium four chips stacked on each other.

Core 2 Duo have two cores built in the same die that have a better Airflow and different Chip architecture.

I would say get this power supply for a new one.
